Just having too much fun lately!
Now that my girlfriend owns a slightly nicer truck than mine it seems like we end up driving separately to the same location. Maybe it's a pride thing or maybe were just on separate schedules, I don't know.
What does this mean and why should I care?
Well, it's given us opportunity to do some 5th gear torque testing utilizing different exhaust housings from 55 MPH to Oh, let's say 90 MPH at times. The drill goes like this on the interstate, light traffic, meet door to door in 5th gear @ 50 -55 MPH, one person counts to three using visible fingers and the romp & stomp on the accelerator! Oops! sorry "Old School", what I meant to say is, "depress the accelerator in a true consistant progressive downward motion until complete pedal travel is met with resistance with the floor mat"! I remember now, "easing on the power!" What's really cool when done correctly on the interstate at night the headlights from the trailing cars dim similar to a 'solor eclipse' due to the exhaust flume of two mighty Cummins WOT!
Keeno's truck '92 W-250 w/ newly installed 12cm2 housing:
3. 54 gears, LSD and 33" X 12" mud tires. "lonely guy".
"Xanderbilt" '92 W-250 w/ 16cm2 housing:
3. 54 gears, open diff and 36" x 9" highway tires. "Cocker Spaniel usually on board".
The 'roll on' (non-scientific) testing has revealed somewhat expected results.
On Flat ground my 12cm truck will immediately leap 2-3 truck lengths on "Xanderbilt" due to my increased low RPM boost and overall numerically higher axle ratios (tire size). I usually enjoy this lead until "Xanderbilt" starts breathing (16cm2) and progressively walks by me at the higher MPH and 'Bonneville Salt flats' overall gearing. The only defense my truck has in the higher end MPH is if we're going up a grade, then Keeno reigns "King of the Hill" always!
I believe that 5th gear roll on really do showcase the differences between the 12cm2 & the 16cm2. It's all about preferences and how you wish for your Cummins to build power.
At this rate valet parking is getting expensive!... ... ... Keeno
