It's Monday morning & I'm back in the workplace after spending 2 1/2 weeks out west in Jackson Hole, Moab & a few places in between.

My trusty old truck decided upon entering Wyoming that the original Getrag (182,000 miles) had been in place long enough & began to Howl in 5th, 4th & sometimes 3rd. At first I wondered if it might be the Dana 70 rear axle or the bulletproof NP205 Transfer Case because the noise was with vehicle speed & not engine speed. I couldn't decided if this developement was a CURSE or a BLESSING! You see a new NVG4500HD has been on my wish list for sometime and now I was in the neighborhood of the one of the best installers in the country. :D A quick call to Quad 4X4 (406-446-2427), near Roberts, MT. put my mind at ease when Dan & Amanda Guarino said they would be able to help w/ my situation. Their article appeared in the Issue 26 of the TDR on page #124 and I knew of a couple of our First Gen brothers that had already paid Dan a visit for the NVG4500HD Conversion (Bob Beauchaine & Mike Hurd).

In the 3 days that I spent w/ Dan & Quad 4x4 he took the time to also rebuild the CV joint on the front driveshaft & completely rebuild the Dana 70 while we were waiting for the trans to be delivered. The rear axle on my truck was showing 30 thou of backlash when the spec is between 5 - 9 thou and in need of bearings & re-shimming. Dan mentioned that the Dana 70's seem to need bearings about every 125,000 - 150,000 miles and mine was no exception.

While $3740. 95 is a huge chunk of change to spend on an old truck I feel this a worth while investment on a truck that I plan to still be driving 10 years from now. The cost of the NVG4500HD Conversion is $3295. 00 (all labor included & no sales tax req'd) and the remainder was for the Dana & front driveshaft rebuild. Dan charged $190. 00 in labor & approx. $150. 00 in parts for the rebuild of the Dana. I challenge anyone to find a more knowledgeable person & a better price to service the rear axle to this extent.

With the new trans in place all I hear is sweet Cummins music where I had static before!

Two Thumbs Up for Quad 4X4 and the new trans & mods! :) :)

Well KEENO, let me be the first to congradulate you on a lot of money spent, on a very worthwile cause:cool:

What you said about the rear axle makes me wonder though. My truck is up to 147,700 miles now. I don't hear anything or feel anything, I'm sure that you probably didn't either. Its got Amsoil in it, so I'm not too worried;)

I only wish that I had a front driveshaft with a CV joint that needed to be replaced.

Jealous of all of you transfer case, Dana 60 4x4 havin' guys,

I bought mine through Dan at Quad 4 X 4 and could not be happier with them and the transmission. Mine will have a year on it come next month and about 12,000 miles and is among thje best investments I've made.

Hey Matt! Good to hear from you... .

The NVG transmissions that Quad 4X4 installs is brand new and not a rebuilt. The manufacture date on this NVG4500HD was MAY 2001 and it's suppose to have all of the latest NVG "fixes" for the 5th gear problem.

This was still a concern of mine because NVG still hasn't applied the "fully Splined" shaft that Standard Transmission has worked out as a permanent fix for their rebuilds. I truely wish I had that fix in place but what is one to do when in Wyoming/Montana w/ a trashed Getrag? I do feel comfortable knowning that this is a brand new trans verse a rebuilt, but you could make a argument for a Standard Transmission Fully Splined rebuild VS going new NVG and relying on their "Band-Aid" fix for the problem.

Regardless, this trans is quiet and it's hard to believe I was living w/ the accepted noise from my slowly dying Getrag (unbeknownst, to me). The shift pattern is short & crisp, much like a quality car trans and it just allows that Cummins to sing.

It might just be my imagination and having driven the truck for so long at elevation, but this thing is making SWEEeeeeeT power now that it's back sucking the oxygen rich environment here near sea level. I don't remember the truck being this strong w/ the old trans!

My imagination? Probably! Coincidence? Not Sure! :D :)

I had the same feeling with mine. Coming out of Whitefish MT in Sept. 2000 towing my trailer (GCW 12500 lbs) I got stuck behind a older Chev PU towing an older trailer. The first chance I got to pass him was on a hill. I put it in 4th and blew past him. When I pulled back in I was doing 60+ and running against the governor. All I could hear was a Hummin Cummins. My getrag made so much noise that 55 was about tops in 4th.

At least I know there is a fix for the 5th gear out there - there's no fix for a noisy Getrag.

Happy Trails

Amen! & please pass the Castrol Syntec...

Amen Brother Beauchaine!

Dan (Quad 4X4) & I talked extensively about NEW verses Standard Trans Rebuild & he feels confidant that the latest generation NVG have at least taken some pretty good measures to insure 5th gear retention. In the end my thoughts were similar to yours, if I loose 5th I know the fix (Standard Trans) and at least I'll be starting w/ a known trans because it was new when purchased & driven by me.

Dan & also talked about the cost of the 2 options for those who can plan for a conversion VS being "in need" as I was.

Dan mentioned that I had actually saved myself money & hassle by having him doing the work & standing behind his parts & product. His opinion was that if I had ordered the kit from him ($650. 00 bellhousing, special attachment parts & video) and had it shipped. Then ordered a Standard Trans 4500 & had it shipped and then returned the core (additional shipping) that I have paid for His labor & expertise in shipping alone. On top of this I didn't have to spend and time on my back, staring & scratching my head under my truck for 12 - 15 hours. :) An added bonus is that Montana has no sale tax and the NEW trans has a 1 year warranty w/ unlimited mileage.

I guess Now I can participate in the Amsoil VS Syntec trans lube discussions over in the Second Gen Forum when they arise. :D

Hey Bob!

I was just reflecting yesterday about discussing your new Aero Aux. Tank that you had just installed before I left. I remember making the statement that one day I'll have all of the "Goodies" that you have replaced/enhanced on your truck. I now remember mentioning the NVG4500HD specifically in addition to the tank.

Just goes to show ya! You better make sure your Visa/MC can support it before wishing aloud in a public forum. Your wishes might come true when you least expect it! :D :) ;)
