MY 2000-3500 periodically blows 20amp starter solenoid fuse. Has anybody else had this problem and what did you do to fix it? Was told starter ignition switch was bad. Can anyone confirm this?
My truck had a similar problem, and it turned out that some insulation had worn off of the wiring going to the starter. This ended up shorting out and blowing that fuse. Needless to say it was not easy to find, but was a cheap fix. Good luck!
It might be a good time to buy a cheaper style multi meter. Maybe someone can give the pin out for it but. Measure the resistance (and write your findings out) of the different contact points through it this will tell you if there is excessive resistance through it and needs to be replaced. I think you should typically find resistances of 0. 090 / 0. 003 ohms and less.
My 2001 3500 solenoid shorted internally and caused the 20amp fuse to blow. It occurred at 187K and I went ahead and replaced it with a rebuilt starter/solenoid unit with a lifetime warranty. $187 dollars exchange but no problems since and now at 223K.
