Gents,

I'm looking for a keyless entry system for my truck. I've priced the Mopar setup for $175-ish and then there's the stereo shops setups from anywhere from $99 to $250. I want something that will last. Sure I could buy the $39. 95 keyless from Autozone or Wallyworld... A good warranty is a plus as well as something I can install myself and still have a warranty (on the keyless not the truck, 184K there).

I was hoping that I could get some choices as well as comments on durability of the remotes. I have a bad tendency to roll around on the ground with my keys in my pocket breaking remotes on previous systems on other vehicles.

Thanks in Advance,

I picked up several Valiant keyless/remote start units from JC Whitney on sale for $40 about five years ago, all are still working great but cost a lot more now. Some I installed just for the keyless, I wont say it's easy but it's not too bad. Hardest part is finding the right wires in a tight bundle of fifty. You also have to remove the A-pillar and the front edge of the headliner to route/install the antenna and it's wire. Remote works from 300 ft and would be hard to break because it's so small.

I got a Matrix system, and because it's so cold sometimes here, I also got remote start, and security. As for the durability of the remotes, I do maintenance at work daily and almost can't count the times I thought I broke the thing in my pocket. All the fancy carbon fiber looking stuff is gone, the labels on the buttons dont even look good anymore, but shes still tickin. Probably one of the stereo shop systems you speak of, I got it at BB for around 450, and they threw in the installation. I see it as an investment.

I have the Mopar EVSII system on my 96. While the system works well, the remotes suck!!!

Not because of range or function, but because the buttons are too sensitive. Other keys bumping against the remote will set it off, as will stepping up into the box for loading/unloading.

If there were a cover or something over the buttons it would be much better.

I guess the trick would be to have something with good resistance on the button.

remote start for a stick

can it be done to have a remote start for a stick i understand i would have leave it out of gear. but were i park at out at work it is level ground. how would you bypass the clutch pedal safety.

If you are very confident that you will always leave your truck in neutral any remote start will work, just bypass the clutch safety switch with a jumper. NOT RECOMMENDED, these trucks have enough power to start and go in gear even with the parking brake on!

There are remote starts made for manuals that sense the shift lever position, if in N the remote will then bypass the clutch safety switch.

what is the best one to look

it sure would be nice when it is 20 degrees outside at work and all i have to do is open the back door hit remote button and 10 minutes later be driving home.

With our diesels, and the "Wait to Start" timing, how does that remote start know when to start "Cranking on the Motor"? In the northern states it would have to crank for about 10 min to start, course you lucky dogs in FL or Arizona, wouldnt have a problem.

My remote starter has an zero, 15, 30 or 45 second delay with the ignition on before cranking for the preheat. Others are tied into the wait to start light. I have mine set to zero since I always plug in when it's cold enough for the grid heaters to come on. When plugged in they don't even come on at -30°.
