DF. . I know that this is something you and a host of others understand... but a big bunch of us are very challenged with the electronics side of things... . would you mind going about two or three steps further and explain what this linked item is and does... thanks for you understanding

basicly it allows you to plug in your PC or laptop to the CAN (Controller Area Network) on the truck and look at the Data packets that are being sent between the ECM and the VP44.

I've been interested in this for a while. What do the data packets tell a person? Is there a real benefit to being able to look at this data? I know its not necessary to do all this for the average owner... but I've been developing an interest in doing some laptop monitoring of my trucks performance. I like that kind of stuff.

so in the real world we live in ... what can we do with these other than use as a monitoring devise ??

I have this new lap top that I learning how to play with and.....

Those are communication adapters that allow your laptop to talk to the engine computer over the J1939 databus. The expensive Cummins Insite software will still be required to read and understand it. We dealers pay somewhere around $1000 up front for the Insite software and about $800 a year subscription fee to keep it up to date.

DF,

We built our own CAN/RS-232 adapter and it works well. The problem that we have run into is that SAE left open in the J1939 protocol a section for manufactures to use there own proprietrary PGNs/ protocol. The only standard J1939 in the ECM transmission are fro total mileage and fuel used.

Yeah, I remember discussing this a while back.....

did Cummins use the expansion capability bits 4-12? or did they stick with 5-21

Did they stick with the basic J1939 format, or did they change it completely but still stay with a 29 bit identifier?

on a side note... what are you using to operate the HY40? do you currently have onboard air?
