Hey, I just installed a "Mopar Guy, Big Honking Air Filter"

My truck was sleeping before, next to no boost until I hit fourth gear (even w/ a K/N). Now, I can pull 5lbs in second no problem! 10lbs in third and it doesn't grumble, it roars! I know, I have no muffler, but I never would have guessed that a change in the intake would have this effect. My truck just sounds and feels better.

The drawback is protection from water for 1st gens. (the 2nds have to worry about heat too cuz it's back by the exhaust). It has rained since I put mine in and the water stained the element and made it expand. I put some 6" roofing drip edge on top and attached it to the fender to catch the water and direct it over the front or back of the filter. Not great but functional. Water may come up from the fresh air vent on the bottom in wet weather, I will continue to check it to see if it is a problem.

I feel that with minimal effort I have made a positive modification to my truck. Now it seems like I've got some kind of fever. As the kids might say, "It's the Bomb!"

How's that BHAF setup working out in your truck?

I had followed some of the BHAF thread before, but it seemed no one had tried it on a first gen at the time. What parts & mods did it take to install it? Thinking about the weight of the new trailer has me thinking I could use some more power. Never enough.

The install is pretty straight forward:

Remove your air filter

Loosen clamp to remove flange at the end of the intake hose

Unbolt the air filter case

Insert BHAF into intake hose and tighten clamp.

Mine sits right where the old case was. I did run into two problems. One, the BHAF would come loose from the intake hose. My clamp had bottomed out the threads and wouldn't go any tighter. My solution was to put wood shims under the clamp and it hasn't come loose since. Second, was the water I mentioned above.

These solutions are not fancy, but the do seem to work. The benefit is an increase in performance with minimal expense, time or frustration.

What kind of filter do you hook to the end of the hose? What is part #. Does filter just lay there or is it supported by something. I would like to try this set-up and see if it increases my performance.

Numbers

The BHAF rests on the air intake tube (that comes from behind the front bumper and fed the box) and stays right there. There is metal mesh around the outside which supports the weight.

There is also a male nipple(?) that goes inside the intake hose.

Do you mean it hangs right off the turbo inlet so you don't need the rubber hose. If this is the case you wouldn't need to remove the air filter box would you? Wouldn't a k&n flow more air than this paper filter you're using?

Can you hear turbo whistle better with this filter set-up?I can't seem to hear mine now.

The filter sits right where the air box was. I went back and editted that post. Should I have said the fresh air intake?

The K&N that I had looked old. Maybe it does have more flow but was constricted by the box???

As far as the whistle, I can hear it but it is not that loud.

I understand you're set-up now. I just wonder if running k&n in original air box with more holes cut in it would net the same results in air flow and maybe help with the water problem. I can see why there could be a restriction in air flow with just the one small inlet going into the air box behind the bumper.

If this is the oversized paper filter that the 2nd Gen guys are using then I didn't see much gain watching them on the dyno. A clean K&N and the other filter put out within 2 horsepower of each other. Was your K&N clogged?
