I'd like to put a kill switch on my truck. If anyone knows the color scheme of the wire coming down the steering column that would disable the ignition, it would be greatly appreciated.

New to TDR and this site. I moved the breather bottle last weekend based on all the great info from this discussion forum. Thanks to all that gave their ideas.

No clue about the wiring, but I will welcome you aboard and bring this to the top where someone with a service manual for an '01 will see it and help you out.

Welcome.

The info I have is from the installation of an alarm on a '00. It says the starter wire is yellow. I don't remember for sure though. All you would need to do is to interrupt this wire with a simple on/off switch.

On a '96 the starter wire is dark blue and yellow.

Just a word of caution, before you cut the wire test it first to ensure you have the right wire.

Seeing how you have an automatic, some member are also using the "clutch" wire and interrupting that with an on/off switch. I don't know if you can use this on an '01 but just a thought.

doc_t,

I use the circuit that the shifter breaks to prevent starting unless the transmission is in P or N. I don't know what the colors are for your truck, but I would STRONGLY suggest that you purchase a service manual. It seems kind of expensive but will pay for itself if it saves you one trip to the dealer. The after market versions are just so much paper. The one to get is the real one.

I used the loop in the plug for the clutch engagement switch. I have a 99 auto so the plug was to the left of the steering column by the firewall and had a green wire looping the 2 wires together. I put toggle switch in the loop.

Something else for you to think about. Other members have put a switch in the fuel solenoid circuit so the engine will crank over, but not start. Not sure where to find this post, but someone else might. Good Luck.

Hi, and welcome

I chose to go with a push button switch--it must be held in to crank. That way I do not have to remember to turn the switch off when leaving the truck, and since it won't crank till I hold the button in, there is no problem about remembering that.
I put it in the wire from the ignition to the starter silanoid(actually, between the power dist. center and the starter silanoid. -its a brown wire that goes from the power dist. center to near the left hand battery and then down to the starter. Near the battery there is a plug connection. I unplugged there and ran wires through the firewall, under the carpet and up under the drivers seat. I located a nice looking black push button on the lower left skirt of the drivers seat, so that it is handy for my left hand to hold the button down while turning the key, and hopefully looks like a seat contol button.
My theory is that a thief is going to give up and go away long before figuring out the no start problem.

Good luck
Vaughn

I just ordered the Service Manual. I believe it will be nice to have for this project and others down the road. I definitely want to have the correct wire before I start cutting. I just need to decide whether I want to splice in under the hood or under the dash.

Thanks for all of the ideas,
David

You can use this info to get started in your new manuals. My 2001. 5 (late 2001 manual) shows the start signal is a 14 Ga Yellow wire that goes down to where the clutch switch would be if you had a manual transmission. It is circuit T141 and there should be a Yellow/Red jumper that bypasses the clutch switch on your Auto. From there it is routed to cavity 86 in the Starter Relay (PDC under hood). See pages 8W-21-2 and 8W-10-4 in your new manual when you get it. #ad

Merryman,
I did the exact same thing you did on the kill/no start switch. Just spliced into brown from starter and to the momentary switch on driver seat. Gots to push it and press clutch pedal to crank engine. It will save the batteries when some fool tries to crank it and it won't!
