New Member, 1st time here, 1st diesel vehicle. I abosolutly Love it! Purchased 5/30/01 - Lt. Driftwood, 99, quad, lwb, slt larame, auto, 4X4 - non leather, 76,605 miles on it. 16 mpg city 22 hwy - did I mention I love it? Sorry, someone at work just bought a spankin new one (non-diesel) didn't even get to make the first payment on it and it was stolen at his home (Philadelphia, PA). Got up to go to work and no truck - I can't imagine!

So, the simplest thing to do is to install a kill switch. Without re-creating the wheel here, figured I'd ask to see how someone else did it. You know, before I deploy an air bag or something.

Thanks, Joe Mc

Change your profile so that other memberes can e-mail you. I'll gladly offer ideas if I can do it privately.

Need to say if you have AT or manual also. A switch hidden in your choice of locations in series with the clutch safety switch can help keep your truck where you left it.

Thomas is looking out for your and his best interest with that request. While posting such good security ideas may seem like a great idea, the badguys would undoubtedly use it as much or more to their benefit than the goodguys. It is more effective to pass along such ideas in a less public venue. ;)

I still think my security system is at least as effective, and besides it would help save me boocoo dinero on wolf feed each month if I had an occasional badguy make the attempt. :D

I mentioned this on another thread, but on my 01' auto with the factory alarm, if you pull the power window fuse, the fuel pump relay relay wont function. Just something to keep in mind if you are going to park your truck in a REALLY bad area

A hidden, momentary, push button switch in the starter silinoid wire does it for me; no push button, no start. Cant forget to turn it off either as it is allways operational.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a Turbo Diesel Lifesaver to me. It will allow ya to set cool down time, walk away from truck, but also built into it is a "kill" switch to where the truck can not be started.

Kills two birds with one stones... ... .....

The TDL sounds like a real deal for an automatic, but what about us 5spd'ers who park on very uneven terrain? (read 1 leg longer than the other from walking on the side of a ridge) ;)

Thats a good question, no idea on the answer since I don't have a manual. Also the orginal poster has an auto too, which is why I suggested it :D

Guess you would have to rely on your Parking Brake, but I know hardly anyone does so the manual guys I dunno what to say. Anyone out there have a TDL on a manual truck?????

The wire I refer to is about a 14 or 16 ga. wire that runs from the ignition switch to the silinoid. )n the '01 it travels from the power distribution center , past the driver side battery and down to the starter; It does not carry any substantial aperage-it only trigers the silinoid when you turn the ignition to the crank position.

I have used that system on my last two trucks for a total of over 10 years and 150K miles with out a problem.

The switch I use is a black push button mounted on the drivers seat skirt; it looks like it should be part of the power seat operation. Doesn't seem likely that a would be thief would think to try that while depressing the clutch and turning the switch. I also wired in a bypass switch under the hood for those times I need to leave the truck for things like new tires, etc. I could say service, but the truck has not been back to the dealer for any of that yet with only 29k miles.

Under the dash by the main harness distribution box. The white box to the left just above the brake pedal. You'll find a black plug with two yellow wires coming out from it. On the other side of the plug is a loop with a connector that just allows power to flow through the circuit. On manual transmissions this is the clutch safety switch. Pull the loop from the plug and cut the wire. Then attach a long lead to each of the cut ends and run them to a secret switch. If you're creative you can figure out a few places where it could go. You can even wire in a secondary switch and make it that both have to be switched in order to start the truck.

Kat,

You should have seen the guy who was trying to sell me one of those remote controlled starters with my alarm system. He couldn't comprehend anyone still driving a stick these days. Besides not being able to let the engine idle in gear, the clutch safety switch would have to be bypassed which as I understand it could be illegal. ;)

Shortly after I explained it to him, he asked me what that electric plug was for that was hanging out from under my hood. I tried to explain to him that was to make it easier to start in cold weather, but he never quite got the point. He thought I meant it kept the batteries charged. I knew I shoulda went elsewhere for my alarm. :D

swamp rat, while traveling in California people were asking me all the time what the plug hanging out the front was for. I got into telling them that it was an electric powered truck, then I'd start it to show how loud the electric motors are. Wonder how many of those folks will by an electric car now?:D
