Finally put a tab on the KDP. It was out about 1/8 of an inch. So we drove it back in and put the tab on it. About a 4 1/2 hour job with shooting some bull and taking a short lunch break. I did forget to check the other bolts in there while I had the cover off. (how dumb can I be?) Everything else looked good aside from the tab bolt not being sufficiently tight when I got in there. Everything went pretty well. Thanks to all the guys for posting notes on it and making my job much easier. This is a great site.

Its a good feeling too have it done. It seems that the bolt next to the dowel pin is not very tight at all on most engines, I wonder if the forces that walk the pin out also loosen that bolt.

I also tabbed mine this weekend. Mine was out, in fact you could grab it with your fingers and slide it back and forth. I could not pull it out with my fingers though. My tab bolt was pretty loose.

Greg, not to bust on you but I will tell you about my neighbor's first gen. I had told him earlier in the day that I was going to tab my pin so he wondered on over to see how I was making out.

His truck had died on the turnpike a few months ago and he just got it up and running. The next bolt below the pin had come out on his, breaking the end of the camshaft off but not ruining the gear.

I've read just about every post on every forum relative to the KDP and I think this is the first instance I've heard of where the bolt actually came out and caused damage. Nearly everyone says that the bolt was loose or not very tight (mine was barely finger-tight when I tabbed my KDP), so now we know that it's not just the pin that we need to be concerned about. All the more reason to do the tab method IMHO.

When my neighbor got his truck ripped apart, the first thing he did was look for the pin which was out but still there. He looked and looked until he found where the bolt came from since it is hard to see from above. I checked all of mine, maybe two or three were loose enough to be of concern.

He mentioned that he had put a new head on but at the time, I was engrossed in what I was doing. I need to ask him what for on that. All in all, he spent 2500 bucks to patch it up plus over a buck to get towed off the turnpike.
