How can I tell if my engine has the KDP without tearing it apart. Can I tell by VIN or some engine marking? -- Doug

as far as I know the only sure way is to tear it apart to see which gear case your 01 has.

No way AFAIK, On mine, nothing was visible to indicate an issue. Pulled the front cover and the KDP was out of the case about an 1/8th inch. "Just in time" comes to mind. One for sure way to know, however, is when you are missing a huge chunk out of the front of the engine front.

89 to 2002 all have the dowel pins(KDP) some of the 24 valves have a stepped timing case (enclosure with hole ). It seems TST and/or Genos has both washer tabs (one for non stepped cases and one for stepped cases).
