 I have looked around for all the information I could find about the killer dowel pin and notice tha most of the failures seem to be ,at least for the 1993, CTD's that have been modified. Especially those with HP over 205. then noted that of the thousands manufactured that Cummins admits to some of the pins were not the correct size but they installed them anyway. also ther seems to be a number out there of failures to date being 496. And that Cummins set forth a criteria for repairing those that were loose, or thought to be, by using wick loctite.

It seems incredible that Cummins would admit to a failure and not issue a change order(recall) or extend the warranty in the event of failure.

I don't know the requirements of a class action . Is 496 enough?

The real question is : What are the odds of having this failure if your CTD is not modified?

Food for thought. May I have you comments.

I'm not sure where the number 496 came from but I would guess that there have been more failures than that, just not documented. I personally know of 2 1993's that have had the pin fall out, both around 100 thousand miles, both completely stock.

If you haven't fixed your pin I would recomend you get it done, it's not pretty what it does to the front of your engine.

Both trucks I know of were lucky, they only lost the timing cover not the cam or pump gear.

Just my $. 02

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at it and it's tight. Now find out that Cummins has a tab for it the part no is #3958017. This is from a serious post by illflem dated 02 27 02. This is a lengthy and detailed post. I have been reading posts as you can tell, and will continue to read and re read as my retention needs duplication. Silverdale? I am from Port Angeles/ Good running:cool:

Take a look at page 148 of issue #40 (the latest) of the mag for how to do the job. TST is selling a kit with all the needed parts at a good price.

I'd take the front cover off and check the timing case bolts. I'd loosen them and locktite them. They came loose in my old truck and ruined the engine. Purchaser said he had $3000 in the engine.

How many 1990's have had a pin fail? Mine hasnt been done yet.

I did my 98 last summer. I pulled the case cover because I was doing the front seal anyway.

It was flush. I cleaned it, and green loc-tited it, then I tabbed it. I also pulled the oil pump bolts and blue loc-tited them, and the cam cover bolts too. This was at about 90K miles.

It's stock except for the last 10K miles or so I had the 370 injectors.
