You folks melting down there in the plains this week . . . how are you guys surviving? The media has everyone thinking it's one of the worst heat waves ever, is it really that bad?

High today is 96 tomorrow is 97. The humidity is the killer. Say it is even hotter out west.

Air/cond failed last week at work. Luckily I was working the night shift.

I am ready to make a mister that will mount in front of a large fan.

Yes, but persistent drought makes it depressing to the spirit as well. Its not as bad as last year, which was hot and drier. The cottony cumulus that float through provide some nice shade for the guys who toil outside. August and September will be the withering months. Central Alabama, ain't nothing like Texas or Louisianna though. Real hot for them coons and steers.

It is 96 here and like a steam bath. Very humid. I have seen 103 back in the late 60's, so the global warming tactics won't work yet!!!

BTW, when it was 103-maybe 69 or 70- I was bucking bales and throwing them 7 high on the truck!! Truck was another 3 higher. I can't even focus that far away anymore!!!!

Tomorrow is going to be a little hotter.

It is finally cooling down here. They are only predicting high 80's to low 90's this week. But it has been high 90's to a little over 100 for a while. Pretty typical for a Nebraska summer. Thankfully its usually fairly dry though the humidity has been a little high lately.

Pretty hot TRLTRSH, what city/town and date is this info for? Going to check Weather Underground (I can post their graph). Guessing it's somewhere in the middle east (not likely to see those numbers in the US).

Fox, it ought to feel hot for you. . . looks like for Chatham IL it shows 94F high today with a dew point of 80F, that works out to a RH of 64% and Heat Index (apparent temperature) of 114. . . that is a higher heat index than felt by a lot of OK & Texas today (humidity has been pretty low, teens & low 20s).

Around here (SE Washington) overall it has been a pleasant summer, only 7 days of triple digits with 105 the hottest back in June, but quite a few days in the 80s the last two weeks.

I don't remember the specific day but if the link does not work, check out Bouse, Arizona down at the bottom of the page, go to July 31, 2008 in the menu and 117. 6 will show up as the high for July. We survive here because normally the humidity is very low, unless a monsoon thunderstorm comes along and rains on us, then its pretty miserable for a few days Get the chores done early, then back inside, till the sun goes down

TRLRTRSH I think the dew point/humidity numbers aren't right, I'd go by the dew point line on the graph (which runs between about 55-65F). Take 3pm for example, that would give you about the highest heat index for that day. . . about 63F dew point and 115F air temp. That works out to 19% RH and Heat Index of 119F. . . still plenty dang hot. Here is the HI calculator I use: Heat Index Calculator

Our humidity is almost always low, in the teens or single digits. But once in July 2002 we had heavy down pour then 109F for the next two days. Here is July 13 2002 for Pasco WA, at 5pm dew point was 79F and temp 109F: History : Weather Underground

Vaughn, I did notice that. Although my thermometer on that day did show a high of 117. 6 I would have to go through day by day to find it.

P. S. (I take my temps in the shade) A lot of locals down here take their temps in sun! It scares the snowbirds when they came back in the fall:-laf:-laf:-laf

Plugging those numbers into the calculator gives a Heat Index of 122F

The highest temperature recorded in Arizona is 128°, Fahrenheit. This record high was recorded on June 29, 1994 at Lake Havasu.

Can't imagine heat like that, although we did get a taste of it when our Heat Index hit 131F on 7/13/02.



The highest for Washington State was recorded at a station about 10 miles from here, 118F at Ice Harbor Dam, Aug. 4 1961 as I recall.

I can remember when I was in the Army back awhile stationed down at Fort Mother Rucker in Alabama, one could take a shower and put on a clean DRY uniform and go outside for a few minutes, then be soaking wet:-laf:-laf:-laf

But anything is better than Puget Sound weather, rain,rain, drizzle, rain, drizzle, rain rain raindrizzle rain drizzle... ... couldn't take that anymore. I believe it was Samuel Clemens that said "The mildest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in Seattle:-laf:-laf

Rainier to the south and Puget Sound with Olympic Mountains to the West. But the desert side of Washington it's ~300 days of sun a year and annual rainfall of only 6 inches, and the scenery is very brown :-laf
