5th whel hitch

Please explain weight-distributing hitches

Has anyone used or tried one of these adapters on their 5,ver. It's an adapter that mounts over the kingpin, changing it from a 5th wheel, to a gooseneck hitch. I'm putting a flatbed on my truck and don't really want a big well in the bed for the 5th wheel hitch. I also think the gooseneck will be better seeing that it will pivot in all direction on rough ground. Any comments that will help in my decision would be appreciated. The 5'ver I'll be putting it on weighs 8000 with a #1500 tongue weight. The adapter has a 20,000K rating with a 2000 Lb tongue weight rating, so I should be ok there.

Have one on my 5'er

I had a post with this same question last December, majority of the folks said the 5'ers were tearing up due to the torque applied to the trailers. I called the manufacter of my adapter and asked him about the adapter problem and he said it depends on the manufacter of the 5'er. If the trailer is cross braced you won't have a problem, he said some of the 5'ers are not cross braced and they will come apart. Don't know if he was feeding me a line but I gave him my 5'er manufacter name and he said they were cross braced and my trailer would be fine, got a few thousand miles on it with no problems, I check for cracks before, while fueling, and after stopping. So far so good.

Thanks, I found your old post. Reading it, I have deciced already to go with the B+W Hitch. Don't want to take the chance on tearing something up.

With the B+W system it mount to the frame with pre-existing holes. Does anyone know if the ball will end up over the axles or ahead of them. I need to keep my hitch center rather than ahead, for clearance. I only have 70 inches from the pin to the front of the 5'ver. The bed is 8 feet wide and I had to miter the back corners as it is for the clearance when turning.

The centerline of my B&W gooseneck receiver is probably about 2" ahead of the rear axle centerline. You do have adjustability in the placement of the uprights on the companion 5th wheel hitch, however. There are multiple bolt holes that allow the uprights (that hold the hitch head) to be moved fore and aft as well as up and down.
