I could probably talk the wife into a quad cab if I could get the part of the seat bottom that is covered by the seat back to move forward for sleeping. Anybody know of a kit? Or will I have to engineer it myself?

Get cracking guy! For the life of me I can't imagine how you could do that... .

The front seats recline waaaaay back. And even if you got the back seat to slide forward, you couldn't recline the fronts.

Or were you thinking of creating a large sleeping area in the back of the cab independent of the front seats?

IF that's the case, sharpen your pencil real good. The vertical seat has 'tongues' which slide into 'loops' which hold it in place and the bottom seat rotates and locks in the 'up' position. Taking the entire seat out is a breeze - 4 bolts and 2 or 4 screws.
I had mine recovered to protect the factory upholstery.

If you engineer something simple and effective, please let me know as I let my dogs back there when it gets REAL cold or XTRA HOT outside and they fall in the space where your feet belong! #ad

That's what I've got in mind. If it works for my wife, it should work for your dogs. My brother's coming for Christmas; I'll put his engineering education to work for a change!

I took the back seat out and built a flat shelf out of plywood. I covered it with foam rubber and carpeting. I used the same four mounting bolt holes that are used for the seat and bolted down two L-shaped pieces of 1" wide X 3/16" thick steel. 2 x 4 supports are bolted to these steel angles, and a 2 x 4 is sitting on top of these two supports, running the width of the cab. The shelf is attached to this 2 x 4 via hinges, so I can lift up the shelf at the front and put stuff under it. I have a pair of subwoofer speakers in wedge-shaped speaker boxes (they're shaped to fit under the seat if I put it back in). The front edge of the shelf has a piece of 2 x 2 screwed to the underside of it, running the width of the shelf. This 2 x 2 rests on the top of the speaker boxes. The height of the shelf is about 4" lower than the top of the center seat console lid. I have slept back there many times, but I can't quite stretch out. I'm about 5'-9" tall.
Also, since the backrest of the rear seat was no longer there, the cab got very noisy! I added some insulating material to the back wall of the cab and covered it with more of the same carpeting I used for the shelf. That made a big difference.
If I was carrying more than two passengers, I would remove the shelf and re-install the back seat in about ten minutes. Well, I can't do that now, the seat is in my folks' garage in California, and I'm up here in Washington.
Anyway, it was a simple project, and since 99% of the time I'm by myself, the shelf is much more useful than the seat. Lots of items are now within easy reach while I'm driving, yet they're out of the way. I screwed in eyebolts around the perimiter of the shelf, so I can secure things like an ice chest with bungee cords.
I don't have a Quad Cab, my truck is a '97 Club Cab, but I don't see why this idea couldn't be duplicated in a Quad Cab.

It could be duplicated, but would never satisfy our needs. We've got to use the quad cab for our family car, complete with back seat. All I want to do is be able to slide the seat bottom forward so that it gets out of under the seat back, giving me 2 or 3 more inches of width to sleep on.

What about custom fabricating a narrow "cot" that would fit between the existing seat bottom and the back of the front seats? It could have a short base or legs to line up height-wise to the seat bottom. Perhaps you could also have some kind of a clip system that would lock the underside of the cot to the underside of the seat bottom to keep it in place during your naps. When not in use, you could remove it and store it in the box of the truck.

jsimpson,

Sounds like you want your rear seat to do kind of like what ford does. A few years ago before my freind bought his '99 sport, he test drove a ford. It seems to me I remember the rear seat folded down (instead of up like Dodge) and seemed to make a flat deck-like area. I thought this allowed more usable space when loading up the cab. I can't remember what the back of the seat did, if it srayed in the up-right position or if if folded down also.

Fireman Dave is on to something. It would be easier to fabricate a little fold out "extension piece" than to modify the whole seat to pull out like you want.

I had a 1990 ford f-150 X-cab and the back seat bottom would fold forward and the back rest would fold down to make a deck. This was good for loading suit cases and soforth.

jsimpson- I think the "cot" idea would be good. You wouldn't be able to fold the seat down to let the kids sleep if you went shopping or something, that's the bad thing. But remember if you fold down the rear seat there's gonna be a LOT more noise in the cab because behind the seat is bare metal. But I suppose you could put some noise blocker there, like I did. Just something to think about.
