Kobota Diesel Problem

A friend of mine has a kobota mower with a 3 cyl 722 diesel engine as has the following problem:



It is very hard to start - needs glow plugs a 90°. It takes about 2 minutes of cranking. Won't start at all when it's cold out. When it finally runs he gets smoke out the blow by tube. No smoke out of the exhaust. At a high idle he can push 2 quarts of oil out of the blow by tube in 5 minutes. Anyone experience similar things? Obviously he is pressurizing the cankcase. He is looking to see if they are known to have bad valve guides, head gaskets, etc...

Tell him that I'll buy it for $200 and take the problem right off his hands.



(Rebuild the engine... . then mow/pull to my heart's content )



I'd LOVE to have a little Kubota or similar small diesel lawn tractor... . pick one up cheap and mess with it, etc.



Sounds like he needs to freshen that engine a little bit... . rings must be toast in at least one cylinder... .

Sounds like rebuild time.

The glow plug part is normal even on an engine in good shape, my 3 cyl Kubota needs at least 30 seconds of preheat even if it's 100° outside, park it for more than an hour and it will need it again. Been that way since it was new.

Thanks for the replies. We think it may have a bad oil ring on at least one of the cylinders causing the case to build pressure. He is going to pull the head & oil pan and put new rings/rod bearings in it.

It needs an engine rebuild with a new block. The center cylinder has a step sooo big that you can trip on it.
