Low Fuel Light Doesn't Work

I have a 92 W250 and when I start it first thing in the morning it shakes and blows white smoke out for about 30 seconds until the engine gets a little internal temp. I Figured the KSB. I checked the voltage at the KSB wire with a cold manifold (Cold meaning about 60F) and I got 11. 6 volts so the sensor is good and the KSB should click in. I started the truck with the KSB unplugged and it shakes and smokes the same amount. After warm up I made a jumper from battery positive to the KSB and tested it. There is no change in engine speed/sound with it connected. I am fairly certain I have a bad KSB solenoid. So how do I change it? Can I just unscrew it and screw a new one in or so I have to bleed the pump? What should I apply to the threads? Any info would help.

I believe its the same solenoid part as the fuel cutoff solenoid in which case you can buy a Case, VW, or Cummins part. 24 mm or 15/16" will take it out and put it back. There is an o-ring seal so you don't need anything on the threads.

Ksb??

Doesn't sound like the KSB to me. Either the manifold heater isn't working properly or the pump is ingesting a small amount of air that must be purged before the system atomizes properly.

My 92 and 93 do this at times and both are worse if I park them with the fuel low in the tank. Bushwhacker mentioned a possible air leak (and fuel leak when running) at an oring in the section that has the diaphragm in it (on top of the pump) (AFC?? I don't know what it is called, I am still learning the names of all the parts on the VE. ) .

Mine will on ocassion leak fuel just a tad from a vent pipe there that will drip on the top of the power steering pump. I really ought to fix it but so far it has not forced me to. My high miles 93 has had the KSB disconnected for years and there is no white smoke as you mention. If you want to try a solonoid check with VW as they seem to have the best price.

MCurrie, Welcome Aboard!! Glad to have you here!

I've been running with my KSB unhooked since May. I don't know if it will be a problem this winter, but I am always plugged in when I'm at the house.

Thanks for all the good responses. I thought about it some more and was sure it was the KSB not kicking in so I pulled the connector and it was loose on the wire. I cut off the conector and put on a new one. I also cleaned the heck out of the connector on the KSB itself. Worked like a charm. I started it with it disconnected and it shook and smoked. I hooked up the wire and it was smooth as could be with little smoke. So thanks again to all. I just got this truck a week ago and it rocks. Now I think I will clean some more connectors and apply Di-electric grease where needed.
