Hey guys... ... ... ... .

Why in the world will the L&G tractor not operate w/o the muffler? Its has a 10 hp Techumseh and while performing engine maint I discoverd it will not run w/o muffer in place. It starts but cracks and pops and spits flame etc. etc.

My full sized JD farm tractor will operate just fine with the straight pipe installed!

Inquiring minds wanna know.

No backpressure on the Techumseh. What kind of motor on the JD. Gas or Diesel. If it's a gas engine, get that muffler back on before you toast the valves!

I have a craftsman with a command 14 (kohler) and after 10 years of hard labor the muffler fell off, still runs fine. You didnt knock off a wire by chance somewhere did you?

No damage done to the L&G tractor. I simply wanted to see how it would sound with the muffler removed. I suppose it has something to do with back pressure. Don't understand it though.

The Farm tractor is a gasser. I have convereted all my tractors to straight pips. Some have been in operation for years with out any engine related pronlems.

I have hered it said that the valves will burn if the engine is operated w/out the muffler. I have yet to see this on a John Deere. Again, backpressure is the factor, but don't understand it.

PS

Most the people in the farming community operate the old JD tractors with straight pipes. Just as common as apple pie. Even the Farmall guys get into this practise as well.
