Thinkin of gettin rid of our home phone service. Who has done it?

I really see n use for it anymore. I only get 800's calling me... .

If you have no need for a fax, go for it. When Verizon unceremoniously dumped VoIP, I let the land line lapse. As little as I use the phone, a cell phone works fine for me.

3 of my 4 kids only use cell service, and they are find. I myself keep my ll for the following reason. Occasionally we've lost power for days and sometimes weeks. But, even without power, the LL phone service has NEVER gone down. Even the cell service has been out for short periods of time, or has had other problems. I just like the security of knowing that, if there is any kind of emergency at home, the phone works.

My office is in my home. And I have my office phone on the verizon fiber optic network. If we were to lose power, the battery back up will last for 8 hours. (We've lost power for much longer than that). But, my main house phone is the old copper LL. Eventually, verizon will end support for that. But, until then, I keep it.

No LL even available out in the desert here. The only reason to have a LL would be a high speed internet setup. Satellite, like Hughs or Wildblue does have it's drawbacks.

Got rid of mine. no more sales calls at dinner time and stuff like that. Don't have to jump up and get the phone, cel phone is usually in pocket or close by. Also saves you money in the long run. I was even getting slapped with a low use fee on the land line.

First, do you have clear cell phone connections inside your house. I know I hate calling people who only have cells and you can't understand them or they cut out or get dropped completely.

Second, are you willing to chance having a sufficient battery in case of an emergency or extended power outage

Third, will you commit to never misplacing the phone so that in the middle of the night when you get that "emergency" phone call you can actually find your phone? (for that matter, the call doesn't have to be an emergency)

I guess you can do what you want, but I enjoy having a backup system. Also, I don't want to be a slave to my phone.

I have a basic land line for the dsl service. I don't even have a long distance carrier. However, I noticed the price just went up again considerably (prolly the loss of customers) so I might have to reconsider. Just not too hot on the idea of giving Comcast my business beyond cable.

No land line for 3 years. No issues. Phone does some probs in a 50s brick and rebar house but there are spots where they work. Cuts bill significantly. Modern 911 gets the right cops and FD to your phone location so no issues there. May have to look into VOIP in CO for a fixed phone due to cell coverage.
