I've been looking at truck laptop (computer) stands for our trucks. Jayco and some homemade versions on eBay seem to be the only choices. They vary of from $400 to $40 with the higher priced commercial ones having greater flexibility.

My problem is that I don't want to pay for a sturdy laptop stand that will fit every vehicle known to man. I just want one that fits the Ram cab as I have no plans to move it from one vehicle to another.

I'm also trying to come up with a DIY version and would like any ideas that others have come up with. Sheet aluminum/pop-rivets/pipe/elbows/brackets... Anything!

I would like to be able to view my laptop while on the road for the navigation system and still be able to remove it easily to use inside for browsing/email.

Suggestions?

TDR member Figgy sells a slick one for the 2nd Gen trucks. He's supposed to be working on one for the 3rd Gens, but it seems to be taking forever. :(

Ram Mounts make high quality mounts for a number of applications including lap tops. I have used them for my GPS for a number of years and they are very well made. Check

Jotto - Jayco... how quickly I forget which one is the laptop stand company... senior moment.

Ram Mounts seems like a possibility. I'll send them an email.

Thanks Chad and Casey

Got the Ram Mount installed and I'm impressed.

I sent them an email and they recommended the components for the G3 application. The price was pretty reasonable and now that I know the quality and adjustability, it seems really a good value.

The mount is very heavy duty and reminds me of what the police use or something you might see in a miliatry application. Its that good. With a 6-speed and a backup camera monitor I was worried about thing getting in the way. No problem. Heck, I can even still use the cup holder for my big insulated mug.

Thanks Casey for the GREAT recommendation.

My first post on something that I know about, mounting in vehicles, have done a few thousand vehicle installs (just the design/management) mostly in Crown Vics, some chevrolet caprice, EMS and Fire apparatus. Includes Radios, Modems and laptops.

most common mount solution are from gamber-johnson and scientific dimensions. Two companies recently merged.

Things to look out for: AIR BAG zone, you dont want the laptop to become a projectile. Proper wiring, direct to battery, fused one foot from battery terminal, loom wiring, seal any antenna holes and careful when mounting hump plates that you dont sever wires or other items.

Just started looking at an interesting mount solution from:

We all mostly use panasonic toughbooks, their docks will work for most of the computer series.

Email me with any questions. Oo.

I work for Phoenix Fire. We are using Precision Mounts and some very good ones from Kodiak of Tempe, AZ.

Kodiak has one mount that is very unusual. It is supported by three jointed tubes and jointed flat plates for feet. The tubes are tightened by a gear assembly which pulls on aircraft cable. Once the tubes are tightened, they are as rigid as concrete.

Allows for some unusual mounting locations.
