Hello Everyone,

Is it fesabile to tow roughly 15,000lbs on a long trip with my 98. 5 single axle 2500 4x4??

I have a Heavy Duty transmission with deep pan, plenty of engine power, great brakes.

I would be doing it for my work, we build boats and my boss asked me if i wanted to take my big billybadass diesel for a road trip to deliver a boat on a big tri-axle trailer.

Its a long trip, 1500 miles ME to WY but i would love to do it!!!Oo.

Does anyone have any advice for me??? i don't want to do anything crazy, but i value everyones opionins...

Thank you all very much!!

This certainly sounds like it would be a commercial tow to me. Mechanical aspects aside, are you licensed, insured, DOT registered, etc. for this work? If not, it could be a very expensive trip!!

You probably would get more response asking this question in the Towing, Hauling and RV section.

First thing I'd look at if I were you is your GVW rating for your 2500.

My 3500 with 3. 54 gears is rated at 16,000 gvw. A 15,000 boat would almost certainly be overload on your rig. Second is that I tow regularly 19,000 pounds and all WAS fine until two weeks ago when my Wonderful ATS automatic snapped an input shaft and I was done, "Toast" or whatever you want to call it. I was only 400 miles from home and it to three friends to haul all my ***** home. The cost of the diesel fuel, for those three rigs, was a lot believe me.

Ask yourself and your boss "who will come to your aid if you blow your trans a thousand miles from home?" I had some GREAT friends who came to my aid, otherwise the tow bill would have been out landish. Good luck.

Do you have an aftermarket hitch receiver? On mine, with a weight distributing hitch, the stock one is only rated to 10000#. Unless of course, the trailer is a gooseneck or 5er. If you do decide to do it, you should post some pics. I would love to see a pic of a ram towing a 15k boat. :)
