What is this weird tool used for?

Riding lawn mowers

I see all of the many lasers sold today, with apparently various features. For years I have used plumb bobs, tight strings, and line levels. Yet I imagine there are advantages to the lasers.

What experience have you had with them in their various forms, what features do you feel are quite useful, and what models to you think are good?

I picked up a self leveling one at Sams Club. Great price and it is getting a lot of use in setting up my new shop. It seem well suited for inside work. Sams also had a manual laser level super cheap, but now that I've used the self leveling one, I would not like to go to all the hassle of a manual setup.

PLS brand if your going to use them to make a living. Otherwise any self leveling laser is a good investment. Just look for the brand that shoots a beam in the most directions and prepare your plumb bob, chalk box and level for a lonely existence.

I have recently learned the truth of this statement: "there is no such thing as 'too many lasers'".

Last year I bought a Black&Decker Crossfire laser level. Normally I shy away from B&D products, but I thought "what the heck, it's just a laser level!". Well, it is a fine level, with one fatal flaw: it only has 2 lasers: one vertical and one horizontal (out the right side only). You have no idea how infuriating it is to get all set up to project a line, then realize that your stupid laser beam can only project a horizontal line that moves to the RIGHT.

Now I see B&D recently started selling this one. , which looks like exactly what I need. If I didn't already have my ($50) Crossfire unit, I'd go buy myself the (also $50  ) BullsEye.

Learn a lesson from me: more lasers = better.
