We are taking the road queen family truckster to Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park July 24-28. We have 3 small kids, the aussie dog and a 28' fifth wheel.

Looking for campground recommendations in Lassen. We plan on fishing and touring the area.

Thanks in advance to all my TDR brothers and sisters.

Go the thier website . The only thing stopping me is the restrictions of dogs on the hiking trails . I haven't been up there is about ten years . Back there just cheep dry camping. I also belive there is an entrance fee just to get into the park.

If you aren't restricting yourself to the park and willing to drive a little, I recommend Caribou Wilderness just to the east. They have some great fishing in those lakes. It's been years since I was up there, but the one thing a remember other than the trout are the mosquitoes... :D

With young kids, we don't get too far on hiking trails. Also, we make some sacrifices as part of bringing the dog along. He is getting up there in years and may not be around for too many more. We owe him for his dedicated family service.

I always try to camp next to a fishing stream or lake. All the kids love to fish and when they are biting (the fish, not the kids), it makes for really good memories.

Your are going to one of the best fishing spots in N. Calif. If you dont have to stay in the park I would suggest staying in one of the USFS campgrounds along Hat Creek. We normally stay at the Hat Creek Campground. . It is dry camping only but the creek is right next to it. This campground is about 10 miles east of the Lassen Park entrance on Hwy 44. Farther east there are several beautiful full hookup parks. We have never made reservations but normally arrive during the week. Have a great time Jim

Lassen Volcanic National Park.

We were there mid-Sept last year. Campgrounds were beginning to be shutdown and were very uncrowded. It's a spectacular park. I visited there with my parents in 1962. Kudos to the Forestry Service. Our tax dollars have been well spent. The visitor centers were awesome and gave us a preview of coming attractions. Everywhere you go there are historical markers and hikes for every state of health. Enjoy. We'll be back. :)

Lassen

Went there many moon's ago but the trout fishing in the park was not very good. The Ranger told us that they dont stock the Park. Your not to far from some of the best streams in the Calif.

The latest issue of Fly Fisherman magazine has a pretty good article on Manzanita lake that is located in the park.

A big thank you for the advice. Looks like we will be coming in on a Saturday w/out reservations. We might spend the first night out of the park and check out the first come/first serve spots at North or South Summit for Sunday through Wednesday. It's been my experience that midweek is not too hard to get a spot. Also, the elevation there is about 7,000' so better temps for everyone, especially the dog at midsummer.
