Hmmm..... interesting question... .

I'll have to check mine... I THINK it was about the same time ROC... . now I gotta go out in the dark... .

pb. .

BTW, I don't mean to hijack your topic Roc, if it's ok I'd like to also ask the following bit of trivia...

For 25 RWHP Bonus... .....

Does anyone know what mark(s) on the castings of our (12V) blocks indicate who cast the block for our engines... . (note: prior to the '53 blocks)

Hint... there is a visible casting mark on the outside of the block..... somewere... . :D:D:D

eg: front/rear side/side.

I was traumatized by this today... . ;) either that or sucked in by a mech...

This was printed in the magazine some time ago. I know because I looked at some of my engines here @ the school. The numbers I found are at the left side of the block, near the front and just above the oil pan gasket. The #53 was cast in Mexico, If my memory serves me. We all know what that's like.

I may be mistaken but I believe the 53's were cast in Brazil... but... . that's not what I was looking for.

I am wondering if anyone (aside from the fellow with a nasty butt sleeper yellow work truck that already has too much HP emailed me, correctly I might add. . ;);):D

Hey Scott, if you got a few blocks sitting around the yard you should be able to see the "identifying mark/symbol" ... any other thoughts guys... ???? :D:D:D

found this in the archive

I'm pretty sure it goes this way.

89-91 18. 5cm (non intercooled)

91. 5-92 21cm (added intercooler and changed exhaust housing to reduce emissions)

93 18. 5 (went back to 18. 5 exhaust housing because of customer complaints about power)

You will probably find some overlaps in parts depending on the build date and as changes were phased in. My 93 is one of the very last 1st Gens made (8/93) and has a 94 head on it. 94s hit the dealer lots in 9/93

Jay

Ohhh jjeezzz! We aren't goin to become the "numbers matching- perfect resto guys" are we!! :-laf :-laf

I to own a 93, how do you know if the head is a 94 or not? I don't think mine is a late 93, I think it was built in late 92 actually. Guess I will go out and look at mine.

Michael

Numbers matching? Yeah, some people can get carried away with restorations. Not just car owners,,,,gun owners can sometimes be the same way  I guess when a guy will pay $62,000 for an old John Deere Two Cylinder tractor, one would want the serial number :--)

So I took a look and found the following numbers;

left side of block near the front, just above the oil pan 0906A

Top of cylinder head, left front corner 05H6

What do these mean??

I have no idea, but I'll go out on a limb and say CAT.

Travis. .

oh Pastor my Pastor -

I've got the same 2nd gen head as well... but o'course that won't matter after I get one of y'all's PDR Stage II 12-valve-springy thingies... . with the matching PDR bumpittybumpitty thingy too... . y'aknow. . those things made of Coolieum with trace amounts of Unobtanium... ... but o'course that means I gotta git the two-pack of those twirrly-spinny thingies while I'm at it that makes the truck go whoosh-whoosh and vroom-vroom a lot lot... ...

its my understanding that the 53 blocks were cast in two different locations, and one place did it right and one place didn't,they aren't able to identify which ones came from where though, so you either got a good one or a bad one, anyone correct me if im wrong.

OOooooookay..... well first ... . good try TKingsbury but Cat is not correct... bzzzzztt!!!

"... . I've read that the last of the first gens have a locking converter transmission... " ~~ you know, I'd luv to see one of those... I have never heard of anyone who got one. Strange thing is, the manual does include info regarding lockup TC's... go figure. :D

ANYONE who would pay that for an old tractor NEEDS medical attention... . BAD !! ;):D

Sheeshh... I guess that hurrycane did more damage to Flooridians that we thought... Sammy, you all ain't right boy... ;):D:D

pb... .

edit:... now guys, I didn't say that we were looking for numbers necessarily... I mean it could be, say, symbol(s) perhaps... .

Geeezzz Scott, look again bud... you got a big lead since you can look at a naked block... (rats, every time I say that Dave Miller (hdm48 show's up;):D )

oh... . sorry..... "nekkid" was the Key word there DaveMeister... :D:D:D

Hey, have you ever seen a 1st gen with a lockup from the factory????

bob...

Perhaps I misunderstood. I'm looking for a symbol?? All I foung was this series of dots in a circle w/a pointy thingy point'n to one o them dots. (????)

Scott

Ok... it IS a symbol guys..... and nope, still no cigar there Scott dude... :D:D:D

keep peekin pard...

Maybe some incentive will help... a well known and high HP guy from the E. Coast nailed it ... via email which was nice cause he kept the ball rollin in here... NO YOU CAN'T EMAIL HIM FOR THE ANSWER EITHER ;);):D... . geeezzzzz... thought I wouldn't think of that didn't ya. . :D

'Course he has 10 or 12 years of lookin at these things so we only got another 8 or 9 years to go till we figure it out. .

pb...

OK then, perhaps I need to be a look'n @ MY truck engine as opposed to one o these bus blocks????????? I aint roll'n 'round under my truck in gravel. I'll wait till I pull her over the pit. Someone else will have to look fer now :)
