loud hum

For the last few weeks I have noticed a hum in my truck it started to do it periodically and now is constant. To me it seems to be in the t/c or that area. I checked all fluids in the driveline and glanced at the universals but every thing looked good except for a leaky seal on the out put shaft on the t/c. My truck has 100,000miles on it. Thanks for any help or ideas tha you may have

A little more info

A little more information would help, what year is your truck? any modifications??

When do you hear the loud hum? when the truck is just idling? or when you turn the steering wheel? Or when you are accelerating or coasting? coasting in Neutral?

With a bit more information we may be able to help.

Loud Hum

AT

My truck hum drove me crazy. I have 300k and replaced front drive shaft, wheel bearings (front & rear), U joints on rear drive shaft, rear pinion bearings & seal, and finally bearing in the Transfer Case. The TC was the main hum I experienced and corrected. The hardest part was getting the right parts. Very few parts stores stock parts for the 241 HD. Attached is a web site that addresses TC's http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/tranfer_case.htm

Good luck!

The noise just happens while goigh down the road. At 5mph or 90 with my foot in it or in neutral. never sitting still. my truck is a 2001 QC LB 4x4 3. 55 5spd thanks

Sounds like

It sounds like A Gibson has the answer, I would check the fluid level in the Transfer case, it uses ATF, and the plug is on the back of the case near the center. If you have a leak from the tailshaft, you may have leaked out most of the ATF, and now have a bad bearing in the Tcase.

The other question is does the hum change in relation to roadspeed? It is possible that it is a wheel bearing or pinion bearing.

Hope this helps, Greg L

Yes the faster I go the higher the hum gets. The transfer case is is still full that was my first guess too. All fluids are full thats why I have no clue what it could be.
