Passenger side air bag recall

Bought truck in 2013 with 190k. Feb 2014 I pulled everything apart to replace axle ujoints. Bearings were a little dry inspecting through the ABS hole. I put 12-15 pumps of grease in the hole and put it all back together with new joints. I noticed a little play in what I thought was the ball joint. Figured next time I opened it up I would replace them too.

Fast forward to Dec 2016. I was figuring I would grease again in the winter and do the ball joints. I only put about 10K a year on the truck. So it had about 30K since I greased before.

On my way to camp (150 miles), I hear a faint noise at mile 10ish. By mile 50 I really hear a grinding. I am sure I feel and hear it from left side. I stop and inspect things and cant see anything.

At mile 100 I turn around and start heading home. Call friends to meet me with a trailer. I get back 50 miles. By this point it is pulling so hard to the right I have the wheel at 90 degrees.

I pull into a pull out, and back in to wait for trailer. Huge cloud of smoke come out of right side. WTH? I get out and look. Right wheel is at a 40 degree angle.

No time to fix myself. So I give it to a shop. 1800 later and a litany of parts it back to normal. Needed set of bearings, right side needed rotor, caliper, caliper bracket, brakes, axle shaft. Left side just got he bearing and brakes.

Gotta love friends that can come on a moments notice with a trailer to haul you home in a snow storm on a Friday night.

I think those uit bearings have a built in self destruct about that mileage. It seems they run about 180-190k then fall apart. Passenger side on mine stating making like a shopping cart front wheel at 186k. At leas tit did not come off at road speed, that is NOT a good feeling.

I've had many wheel bearings that give warning signs 1000's of miles before they fail. This one was quiet until failure which I was not able to ID quick enough. And I'm pretty good at ID'ing problems.

I've only ever seen wheel bearings give 1-30 miles of notice before they are done.

The ones on these trucks seem to go from good to self destruct in very short order.

Sounds like a good time for free spin hubs.

Pretty much the same. By the time you hear it making noise and feel something wrong, better look for a place to pull over cuz you got MAYBE 50 miles and that wheel is coming OFF.

I was amazed at the difference my free spin kit made. Much more smooth steering and way more precise. My front tires wear more even now. When I removed my unit bearings at 120 K one was really close to cutting loose. Didn't see any improvement in my gas mileage though.
