sometimes when I try to start the motor the starter spins before it engages the ring gear thus creating a hellva noise, when the starter stops spinning I try again and everything is ok. replaced the starter with a new one about 2 years ago, about 100,00 miles. new sdtasrter time again ? stormy

Where are you getting your starters? I'd invest in a new Nippon/Denso starter from Larry B's. That's what comes from the factory in our trucks. Cost $370 but a dependable starter is worth it in my opinion.

LarryB's Dodge starting problems solved here.

It takes a high torque high current starter to turn the mighty Cummins.

You could try rebuilding it with the extra large contacts and plungers and brushes from Larry b's:

I'd take a look at the flex plate to be sure the teeth have not been damaged.

OK I am talking with experance from older gas engines,so not to sure that it apples here. Sometimes when the starter would turn but not engage it would be what we called the bendx that thing on the starter that engages the flywheel/flexplate and has a spring with it. Never had my starter off to see if they still use them. And as you have the starter off you should put in the larger contacts.

It's been too many years since I rebuilt a starter like that too. These days its considered a replacement. I don't know if that bendix spring is in these starters. The contacts are in the solenoid and very easy to replace. Just remove 3 screws holding the solenoid end cap on and the contacts are there. Look on Larry B's site. Also give him a call... he seems to know these starters.
