Ok I need your help. I have a 04 and it appears the transmission is leaking or the rear of the motor. Cant tell. If your under the truck looking up at the transmission and motor. The pan on the transmission has fluid on it. I can not see if its coming from the rear main and coming down onto the lip of the pan or if the pan gasket is leaking. Also on the drivers side of th transmission there is some fluid by the wire harness.

Truck has 68000 miles.

So with this said could this be a over filled transmission weeping out? or how do I tell if its the rear main seal?

If its the rear main how hard is it to replace?

Thanks ahead of time...

Is the fluid engine oil or ATF? I noticed the same thing on my '06. I thought great, only 40k and it is leaking. Ended up being the blow by tube spitting out some oil that got on the side & back of motor as well as the front of the trans. You might check it out and see if thats what yours is doing. Its on the drivers side by the starter.

Look or feel up over the drivers side of the transmission where the shifter levers hook to transmission. That is one place where the fluid could be coming from but usually only leaks after truck has sat long enough for the torque converter to drain back and overfill the transmiassion. The rear main seal is a mojor project as the transmission and torque plate have to come out, the seal is one piece I believe. bg

Agree with AWise, it is probably from the blow-by tube. If is wet underneath, but not leaving puddles, good chance of normal blow-by.

Oil Pan Bolts

I just went through this, Mine was leaking from the 10mm oil pan bolts,

If the oil is gathering on the oil pan bolts, try this.....

Remove the 10 mm bolts from the oil pan. Clean the bolt and threaded hole with a generous amount of break cleaner.

Reinstall the 10 mm bolts using a generous amount of a high quality high temp silicone.

I did mine with the motor cold after sitting overnight. I then let the sealant cure overnight. That was the end of my leak.

I went through the same thing on my 99 and it worked like a charm. It will fool you on where it is coming from. But it sounds like its your oil pan bolts.

I too thought it was the main seal:eek:Where it is coming from is the space between the gasket and the hole of the gasket,

Hope this helps... .

Well drove the truck a good bit yesterday. looked under the truck when I got home. looks like its from the trany more than anything. Checked the blow by tube and no trace of fluid on the motor. The plate that has three scres by the bell had some fluid on it but when I wiped it off it was dark and dirty so cant tell if its ATF or Oil. Checked the transmission fluid when I got home so it was hot and truck was running and the level was well over the high mark on the stick. Could all this fluid on the outside of the pans just be over filled transmission seeping out of the weep hole ?? I was a little upset as I paid a shop to change the fluid and they put to much back in. So to fix the high fluid level I figure to crack the transmission cooler line at the transmission , the rear on toward the rear axel seems the easiest to get to but not sure if thats the in or out and if that would matter. .

Any help on how to crack the line or removing about a qrt of fluid would be appreciated.

On my 06, it turned out to be a coolant pipe (3" section of hose) near the turbo and near the back of the engine. I could swear it was transmission fluid at first glance until someone told me to check and and see if that hose was wet. It was and I followed it down to the bottom of the bell housing. Tightened the 2 hose clamps and that was it.

Just another thought

The oil is dirty not dark. I am hoping its just over filled transmission... .

any one ... . agree suggestions ?

If it is indeed ATF, and your transmission is overfull, then yes, your transmission is blowing it out of a weep hole inside the bell housing. Pull the inspection plate off the bottom of the bell housing, I bet it's wet inside.

I would just get a large drain pan and loosen the transmission pan bolts to drain some fluid.

well loosened the pan bolts and removed about a qrt of fluid. Tightend the bolts up and will run the truck this weekend. Hopefully this will solve the issue. Will update.

Well the area that was wet seems dry now... so Ithnk this is fixed.

But heres another question/ area... Passenger side above the lip of the oil Pan on the block there is som wet areas. Nothing coming down from the head... could this be the heater hose as described?
