Leak on inside tire.Rear axle fluid?

I have an oil leak on the inside of my rear tire. I beleive that it is rear axle fluid.

I suspect that it is the flange gasket. Does this sound right. Whats the corrrect

procedure for replacing this gasket. Im also thinking of checking the axle bearings . I would appreciate any help as I have never done bearings before and I dont want to ruin anything.

Thanks

Mike

An oil leak on the inside, as in next to the springs or inside the wheel dish. If it is on the inside next to the spring, it will be the hub seal or possibly brake fluid. If it is on the center of the wheel, then, yeah it might be the axle flange leaking.

PS, If you have drum brakes, they should be the outboard style, you can pull them off without pulling the axle and see where the flid is coming from.

Thanks Nick

I have disc brakes on the rear. The fluid is on the inside of the wheel. The fluid in my differiential is low so I suspect something from the axle perhaps the hub seal. I had already changed out the caliper thinking it was the brakes. Still have the leak. Any thing I should watch out for as I take it apart.

Thanks

you're on the right track, mine did that last summer and it was the seals. be sure to check all the brake linings and such, I ended up replacing all the seals, e-brakes shoes, brake pads, rotors, and fluid. not a bad job, just a lot of it.

Getting ready to tear into my rear axle shaft. The manual is not all that clear to me. It describes a number of special tools. Can someone tell me the correct procedure and what specific tools I would need and where to get them. Are they tools that would be specific to Dodge or are they more general automotive tools.

I was going to start with taking off the wheels then the brake caliper and then take off the axle flange bolts which I think are the bolts that holds on the round plate that covers the end of the axle. This is where it looks like I need specific toolsThe rear end on my truck is a Dana 80. It is a 1 ton with dual wheels.

Thank You

Mike

In talking to dodge they couldnt give me the size of the axel spindle nut so I could get the right socket. They gave me the number for Matco Tool. They can get me the parts that I need but there pricey. Someone else was telling me about a Bearing and Seal Installer Kit made by Lyle that is good for a number of different models . Not sure of the spelling. Anyone know the socket size of the axle spindel nut?Has anyone used a bearing and seal kit?If so were did you buy it?Your thoughts please.

Thanks

Mike

Ordered all the parts that I need from www.4x4quad.com. They had the seals, bearings, gaskets, and tools that I need to do the job. They also were helpfull and had the knowledge and experience to guide me in the right direction.
