Hey guys. Changed out my transmission oil with the syntorq and noticed that it was old oil was low. Thought to myself, hope this new pricey stuff doesnt leak out. Well gues what. It is running down the back of the transmission. I searched and saw that some others had trouble with this before. Probably the seal, but I am willing to check other areas first, because some have said it is a PITA. Thanks for all the help, best $35 I ever spent.

My leaked on me one time and i thought it was the rear seal between the transmission and the transfer case. It ended up being that the aluminum case on back of the transmission had a hair line crack and would only leak when the oil would get hot. Just something to look for.

With a 4x4 the cracked aluminum case does apply to you. I would clean it up and check that first.

i will check it as soon as i can, but just in case it is the seal, how hard is that to do?? i did the kdp fix myself (with the assistance of a few Budweisers) just looking to see what i might get myself into. thanks again

There really is no "seal" in the rear of the NV 4500. There is a gasket between the aluminum adapter (for lack of a better word) and the trans and another gasket between the adapter and the transfer case. The adapter and transmission share fluid. Both of these gaskets would require removing the driveline, transfer case, and possibly crossmember to change. Not terribly difficult but it is nice to have a good transmission jack.

transmission leak

My ('95 2500 2wd) 5 spd failed due to lack of fluid, 5 mo. after I bought it. (4 days after being serviced at Jiffy Lube. I'm still in the process of suing them). (It had been leaking very slightly but no way 3+qts. of fluid leaked in 4 days), BUT even after a new / overhauled transmission was installed, I was still getting leakage at the 'tail'. At 2nd shop, closer to home, They changed the yolk and put in new seal. . still leaked. Took truck to a 3rd shop and they knew what was what. The new seal needs to be sealed around the outside perimeter with permatex. They did that w/ another new seal and viola. . fixed. . JohnG

On a 2wd this is true but Boyd is dealing with a 4x4. His driveshaft seal is a the rear of the transfer case. The leak sounds further forward than that.

There is no gasket between the trans and adaptor, they use a sealer. There is a seal in the adaptor that rides on the input of the transfer case and like acouple of the guys said watch for a cracked adapor. We changed on out for a customer it had cracks just in front of the mount. We used brake clean to clean it up and they drove it, the oil would wick out when it got hot. You would see wet wipe it off and you could watch it wick back out. Then there is a gasket between the trans and transfer. The transfer isnt that heavy, I just lift then in and out.

Check to see if your transmission is wet all the up to the shifter. The nv4500 is a "top loaded" transmission and the seal under the shifter is prone to leak if the four bolts that hold the shifter in are loose. Mine was leaking right out the top when I first got it. A little RTV and loctite took care of it.

The older models didn't have the four bolts holding the shift tower on. It was cast right into the trans cover and hte stick was removed with a push and rotation of the "ball" that the shifter comes out of. It is possible his cover is leaking but it shouldn't be from anywhere higher than that.

I was unaware of the lack of a gasket between the trans and adapter, my mistake. I never used one, just fit in place gasket cement but I assumed the factory had put one there. I guess the "ASSUMEing" did me in.

MPalachuk, the seal you're refering to inside the adapter, is that the front seal of the transfer case? If that were bad there should be a noticable drop in the transfer case fluid level correct?

seals in nv4500 and transfer case front to back

input shaft to shaft cover - rubber seal

cover to transmission case - RTV

PTO covers - RTV

Top Cover - RTV

Shifter 94 - 96 Rubber boot

Shifter 97 - 04 RTV on shift tower, rubber boot on shifter

very short breather tube on the top cover with dust cap

transmission case to back cover - RTV

Back cover to transfer case input shaft - rubber seal

transfer case input shaft - rubber seal

Transfer case front to back half of the case, tailshaft housings - RTV

both output shafts - rubber seal

transfer case shifter - rubber seal.

breather tube from the top to the bell housing

vaccume lines fro axle shift rubber seal

is that enough places to leak?

The seal is inside the adaptor, and the transfercase has a seal in the front of it. The small void between transfer and adaptor has no oil unless one of the seals is leaking.

WOW!! you guys are good. i will get in there and find it for sure. there is a ton of possibilities as Jff mentioned. thanks for all of the input, had no idea it was made that way
