I found a cab and chassis for my father in law cheap i might add but like the title says, is this a common head gasket problem area or possibly a cracked head. The truck has 250k on it and a fuel plate, no other mods, if it has a cracked head thats no biggie I have a extra. I let the truck idle for a half hour and there was a 10 inch puddle under the truck. Thanks Steve

Head Gasket

I have a friend and his 96 12v had 62,000 miles and the head gasket leaked in the same spot as you described, dealer installed updated head gasket and no more leaks and the truck has 140,000 miles on it now. Oo.

Thanks for the quick reply, I forgot to mention that it is a 96, hopefully i will get the deal wrapped up in the next week and tear into it, my fatherinlaws newest truck is a 78 ford, you can say he is excited just a bit.

I just finished up on my o-ring job on my 24V using a 12V marine gasket and now I have a leak in the same spot! Anyone have a quick fix?

SAtkins I read a post here on TDR I think where someone tried radiator Stop-Leak and cured the problem. Wish I would've tried that on mine before replacing the gasket and saved the effort. Mine had 351,000 when I picked it up but didn't lose coolant near as quickly (about a cup a week).

AS LONG AS you are certain you don't have coolent also leaking into the crankcase and/or cylinders, the sealant will probably take care of you - I had small seepage in the same area on my '91, no coolent in my oil, so I re-torqued by head bolts and it stopped - the sealant woulda been my next step...

I'll retorque the bolts and see what happens, i would rather put a new gasket down than use a lot of stopleak, my wifes pop hauls cows pretty often, if it broke down my name would be (you fill in the blank). Thanks for all the ideas. as you can see i drive a ford but you can bet what my next truck will be .

Looks like my 95 12V has just sprung a small leak in the same spot (front below bypass hose). Did the retorqe of the head bolts fix things up? There is minimal coolant loss even under a hard pull. Just a little moisture and a blue stain.

What is the torque value on the the head bolts?
