I took my truck in today to one of the local Dodge dealersto get my power steering fluid flushed and have the check my steering components. The mechanic said my gearbox is leaking and the steering pump fluid pressure is 1300, and should be around 1450. Said the pressure might be low do to steering box leaking. suggested replacing steering box. How the heck can they determine the steering box is leaking when the puke tube sprays oil all over it? Can the gear box be serviced? If not what type new one to get?

Thanks

Run the other direction fast! Go spend a few bucks in quarters at the self serice car wash and clean everything up and watch it for a while. Chris

I think the mechanic is claiming an internal high pressure leak, the test is to first check the pump pressure by momentarily blocking the flow from the pump, this should be 1450 to 1550 PSI, if it's low in this test the pump or relief valve has a problem. the next test is to turn the wheel against the stops and check the pressure again, if it's low now and was good in the first test the steering box is leaking internally. Is it hard to turn when going slow or stopped? If it steers ok I would run it. If its difficult to turn at low speeds a new box may be needed, the PCS steering box has been getting good reviews here lately.
