Hi, I just got back from a 2000 mile trip. The last 700 miles I have had fuel leaking out of the injector pump. At idle it is a steady drip, when I throttle it up it drips faster, kind of sprays. When I shut it off, the leak stops, but if I pump the manual lever on the lift pump, it drips a little. The leak seems to be coming from under the pump. By looking with a mirror, I can see an oval shaped cover on the bottom of the pump that is angled towards the drivers side. It has 2 torx headed cap screws holding it on. The leak appears to be coming from under that cover, but I'm not positive. I checked the screws and they were tight.

What should I do next? Thanks, Joel

Joel,

sounds like the gasket on the back side of the pump for the little cover thingie that we were discussing a few weeks ago. Have to remove the pump, or at the very least, loosen it and move it down as far as it will go, then take the cover off and replace the gasket. Since you'll most likely have to R&R the pump, may as well start out planning on that, and save the hassle of the other method not working.

I just replaced mine this evening. I went ahead and took the pump off to install the 3200rpm GS and replace the throttle shaft bushing and o-ring that were leaking. Figured I'd replace the unaccessible cover plate o-ring at the same time. One bolt was tight. The other was very loose. I think I just averted a mess.

Anyway, the pump is all back together. Tomorrow, it is back to Cummins NW. On Friday, I picked up the top end set. It has some kind of funky new valve seals that will not fit our heads. The guy at the machine shop said they looked like something off a powerstroke. Went back to Cummins and they didn't have any of the old style. The checked the Renton store and they had 8. Factory has 15,127. Tomorrow is is done to pick the seals up, drop them off at the machine shop and hopefully, pick up my head. Things are getting closer to being ready to go back together.

Well, the truck has been sitting unused because I haven't had time to fix it. But i'm planning to tackle it this weekend. Is that gasket just a standard O ring from the hardware store, or do I need to locate a specific gasket before I start. Thanks!

It is an o-ring but I don't know about it beig a "standard" o-ring. Mine was green and it is pretty good sized. I ordered a full seal/rebuild kit fo the pump. I know there are so many sizes out there. Everything on the pumps are metric so I suspect the o-ring is as well. If you have a Bosch pump repair shop nearby, that would definitely be the easiest way. Otherwise, you might be taking you chances.

Bosch shop recommended blue locktite on the cover bolts. If mine do this again, I am going to aircraft safety wire.

Well I took off the part that I thoght was leaking. It is a solenoid. The O ring looks ok. Maybe that cover way on the backside of the pump next to the engine block is the culprit. So I need to rotate the pump to get a look at that. I got 2 of the 3 nuts that hold the pump to the timimg cover loose, but I'm having a real tuff time with the bottom one. I heated and bent a wrench to fit in there, but it is still tight. Is there any other bolts to loosen beside the three before I can rotate the pump? Thanks, Joel

Therre is one more on a bracket under the back of the pump. It is a 10mm nut that is pretty easy to get to ... once you know it is there. Been there, done that, felt like a fool.
