Up until now, I had let the dealer change the oil on my 2004. 5 Dodge 2400 Cummins Turbo Diesel since they threw in 5 years worth of oil changes when I bought the truck. A week or so ago, I noticed my oil filter was leaking, so, I decided to go ahead and change the oil myself. When I reached up to remove the MOPAR oil filter, I noticed that it wasn't completely tight. I also noticed that when I drained the oil, it seemed that it may have been diluted with Diesel fuel. Anyway, I went ahead and changed the oil (Mobile 1 5W-40 Synthetic) and I put an aftermarket Purolator Filter on. After pre-filling the new oil filter and adding 11 quarts to the engine, I cranked it up and checked the oil pressure. I then looked out to check for leaks and the oil filter had puked out over 4 quarts of oil. I shut it down immediately and rechecked the oil filter, but it was tight. Since the Dodge dealership parts department was closed, I went and bought another “premium” oil filter (Mobile 1) and installed it with similar results. I ended up reinstalling the old MOPAR filter and no more leaks.
I double checked the aftermarket filter numbers and they were correct. I also checked the center thread of the oil filter mount by hand and it seemed to be tight.
Has anyone had this problem before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
