Check Engine Light/Transmission Loss

I'm just wondering how common this is. Myself and HEYBOSS just changed the oil in both our trucks last night. We noticed that the rear half of my oil pan was full of oil (I have 35,500 miles) we also noticed he has a small leak on his also (about 16k on his)

Fred re-torqued my bolts.

Just wondering if this is common or is this a problem

BTW, no oil spots in the driveway, so not a substantial leak.

thanks for any info.

Batman,

After driving is done for the day, get under the truck wipe the oil pan off and any other affected areas until it is dry and clean.

Then place some clean paper towels or rag under the suspected areas of the engine.

Then check the next morning for your leak.

If a leak presents itself, repeat process (this is so you can tell

the dealer you did this twice).

And of course if positive for a leak, take it into the dealer and they will correct the problem.

This is not a severe problem, but none the less is not right!

So take advantage of the 100K warranty!

Mine is doing the same thing. I changed the oil yesterday at 27500 mi and noticed it. It is not leaking on the ground , just like condensating on the back side of the pan. I cleaned it up good and will keep and eye on it for the next week or so to see where it is coming from. Probably from the oil pan gasket.

I also found oil on the backside of the oil pan. Dealer replaced the valve cover gasket and all is well. Seems the gasket was leaking slightly in the back, allowing oil to run down the back of the engine (between engine and transmission) and onto the back of the pan.

Steve

I believe it has to do with the pan gasket in my situation. We looked above the pan and the block itself was dry. However, I will look closer at it this weekend to see.

Additionally, I cleaned the pan and trans off well last night, so I should be able to spot any sepage easily. If I can't see it I will use die tracer before my next oil change.

I had my oil pan leak also. DC replaced the seal under warranty. Then 2 months later (and now past the 36k warranty) another leak started. Back to DC, this time it was the gasket between the block and the power steering pump leaking engine oil. This one was NOT covered by the 100k warranty because Cummins didn't make that seal. $285. 00 later no leak. Get it fixed while you still have coverage. Dan

TTT

dye penetrant added to oil on Friday, going back to the dealer monday for black light special :(

small leak back of pan area :( 19k on the clock

Power steering leaks and what looks to be the back of the pan also. They don't leak much, just enough to look damp. I should have had the ps pump fixed before the 36K warranty was up but I guess I'll just have to live with it now.

To R&R the oil pan, the trans has to come out. Not a big deal, but I just thought I would let you guys know... Some oil seepage isn't much of a concern, but if it starts to leave drops on your garage floor, its time to get it taken care of. :D

Well guys, here's an update... ... ... ..... truck is going to dealer on Monday. I was told that the last time they did one it took 17 hours. I'm going to be having diesel withdrawals next week.

Wish me luck.

George

Do yourself a favor and spray some foamy engine cleaner up between the motor and trans... hose off and let dry. TIGHTEN up your pan bolts first before letting the dealer RAPE your truck for hours on end. I too had the very same leak you all are describing. Dealer wanted to replace pan gasket and after I was told what they had to do to get my pan out. . :eek: I re-tightening my bolts. No leak in over a year now!!:D :D Your truck will never be put back the same if they get there hands on it. :{

WTF is up w/Cummins???

OK, right about now I'm going to star P!$$ing lasers and farting lightning bolts out f my A$$#@$%!

Just got of the phone with one of the Cummins techs, I will not mention which place I called. But I will mention what was said to me. Which is an elephant size load of crap!!!

I asked if they caould give me the torque specs for the oil pan bolts. The DA on the dumb side of the phone said "Dodge purcahsed those engines with the understanding that they are responsible for all warranty claims" WTF does that mean:mad: All I want is the F%^king torque spec. So I proceed to ask what they would torque then pan bolts to for an ISB in an RV. DA's response: "well, I'd really like to give you that information, but it won't be the same as what Chrysler " HUH?

Am I just a Dumb A$$???? or do you guys see something wrong with this?

So basically, I HAVE to take it to Dodge just so I can find out what the spec is??

Someone on the TDR should be able to help you...

Anyone that has an FSM should be able to give you those torque specs. I would, but I'm @ work and my FSM is @ home... :D

According to my manuel torque is 215 in. lbs. This is for a 1999. Don't know if there is any difference between the years or not. Hope this helps.

Curt

The 2001 Service Manual Supplement says 18 ft lbs for oil pan bolts.

I noticed some drops on the heads of my front bolts, so I just snugged them up by feel. We'll see if that helps. I also 86ed the blow-by bottle, so that may help too. I wondered if oil was being flung around after being puked out of the bottle.

I thought i had a oil pan leak to, until they put dye in the oil. Found out it was the rear main seal.

... Beware of the quiet ones! They're the kind to go postal on you!!! "Oil leak? OIL LEAK!? ... . EAT LEAD YOU 5 STAR SCUM!"

Hey, I thought this was caused by my rerouted blow by bottle painting the underside of the pan... and the axle... . and the frame...

25K and this is the first time I'm down two quarts before an oil change. I wonder where my leak is. Count me in as one of the oily ones.
