Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need some help!!!!!

Now that I have the AFC problem fixed, my last (for now at 266k) problem is a leak that I suspect is from the rear main seal. Oil pan bolts check OK and the leak APPEARS to be coming from the the rear of the oil pan.

If that turns out to be the case, then the transmission has to be "disconnected" and the whole job was quoted around $300. Should I take advantage of this "problem" to have a beefed-up converter put in while the work is being done?

Many thanks...

Make sure the oil isn't coming from a valve cover and running down rear of engine or from the vent tube on the left rear. Oil has a way of blowing and running it's way all kinds of places. At that mileage there's a good chance it is the main seal though.

When you figure out what is leaking you can come over to my house and fix my mystery leak. Lots of things leak at one time or another. Usually drip from the bell housing. There is a good chance it's a valve cover gasket. At least that's the place to start looking. Probably more than one leak too. I tend to park on gravel so the leak is not as noticeable.

I recently extended the vent tube so that it is past the drive shaft. Leak stayed about the same, however. The shop I go to says that they can put some dye in the oil that will show up under UV light and thus indicate where the leak is... . maybe ;) We'll see!

I think I got the same problem. Just noticed this morning a leak about one drop every ten seconds off transmission inspection cover . If it's the rear main seal I'm going to put a bottle of lube seal in it and tear it down when the weather warms up or when I have more time , which ever comes first. Doug

Leak fixed

After several months of further contemplation, I decided to have the rear main replaced. That did the trick! Cost: about $400, $320 for labor. :)
