My father has a 1997 3500 4x4(80k miles) and the steering gear box is leaking from the output shaft. Is the seal replaceable or is it time for a new gear box? Thanks for your input as always!

Mine did and I sucked out the power steering fluid and added the Lucas Power Steering Leak fixer and did it three more times until the system is all Lucas, and the leak stopped as guaranteed. In the really cold weather it groans until it warms up because the fluid is a little thicker. Works great! #ad

The seal can be replaced. $30 or so from dealer. The pitman arm is tough to get off. As long as the saft coming out of the box is not loose, the box should be ok.

I think if you check the shaft, you'd find that it is probably loose... If you read some of the threads in the archives, this has been discussed. I think that there is too much clearance between the pitman shaft and the bearing (contributing to the slop). Maybe check with AGR( the company that sells replacement steering gearboxes). They might be able to shed a little more light on the subject.
