Leaky PS hose

Has anyone else had a massive leak from the hose fitting on the bottom of the PS pump nearest the pulley? The fluid was bubbling out from between the hard line and the nut.



Mine let go just as I pulled off the freeway in Menominee (sp?) Wi this morning, towing the Jeep. 4800 miles on the truck. It took everything I had to make it turn, and the brakes didn't do much either. It went through 2 quarts of PS fluid in the 1 mile between the parking lot where I pulled over to check things out and the Dodge dealer.



The dealer was open, and they tried replacing the O-ring today. No dice. I'll have to drive back and get it mid week after they replace the hose and possibly the pump.



My question: Is this a freak occurance, or has it happened to others?
 
Mine had a crack in the pump where the hose met it. Dealer replaced it without any whining. it was hardly leaking and had not affected steering yet.
 
Happened to mine and ended up having to replace the entire pump. There is a TSB on it for a dampener on the hose because of vibration, I believe that's what causes the leak. Mine ended up with crossed threads or pulled threads from dealer repairs. Tightened it to much, had to replace the pump.

Mine cracked with about 5,000 miles on the truck. It cracked at the fitting down by the pump. It was a sudden thing. It let go in the driveway as I was backing in. Fluid everywhere. I lost so much fluid in about one minute I was without power assist for steering and brakes. The dealer sent out a tow truck and it was repaired. No questions at all.
 
This has me concerned. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to do the steering hose vibration TSB even if I don't have a vibration problem? Do it as a preventive measure? I don't want to spend the $$ for the parts though.

Where did you find the TSB for the PS Hose ? I dont seem to locate it. My hose failed, was cross threaded and cracked the PS pump port. I bought the truck on 12/15/03 and it failed on the way home from the dealer. I was DOA until Jan 2 2004. They could not get a PS Pump, was told there were 207 on National back order.

I feel a little better since no one has had the problem come back once it was fixed. Hopefully I'll get my truck back tomorrow or Wednsday at the latest.

I wasn't having any problems with vibration, but I did have a bit of the 2000 rpm drone. I thought it was just exhaust. Hopefully they will change out this hose while they are in there.
 
I just got the truck back. I did get the new style hose with the dampner, and there was a noticable reduction in the 2000 rpm drone.



The guy at the dealer mentioned that this was not the first time they'd seen this hose leak on a newer Cummins. He said it had been over torqued at the factory and that the crimp on the end had deformed, which caused it to not seal correctly. He also said mine was not cross threaded.
 
Yeah had the same problem with my truck. Had to have power steering pump rebuilt by dealer. If you lose all of your power steering fluid you will also lose your brake. They are combined somehow I think it is by the eletrical system. At least that is what the dealer told me. They had my truck for about a week. They had to order my parts. Mine started as a small leak then got worse. Sorry to hear about your truck. Been there done that. Rhino50

It's a hydro-boost brake system. Instead of a big vaccum diaphram to assist with depressing the brake pedal, our trucks use hydraulic pressure from the power steering system.
