Hi all, My 93 W250 has a leaky left rear axle seal leak on its Dana 70. I tried doing a search for the part numbers and recommendations but I cant find anything since the switch to the new software!

Please let me know the part numbers and any advice you guys may have on this matter. Also, Im assuming my brake shoes are contaminated so should I buy the 3" brake shoes for the one-ton trucks instead of the 2. 5" that are supposed to go on my truck? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Hey RamBill!

I dug a few Axle Seal P/N's out of the 'search' directory for you (used: "axle seal" for search topic).

Side note: All of our 'handles' and Last Name's (displayed) now appear on all the old postings. Even Gary-KJ6Q's facial photo appears throughout the old postings :) :) :)

Back to the P/N's:

Chicago Rawhide P/N: CR28746 @ $8. 50 ea. approx.

Mopar P/N: 5003464AA @ $19. 50 ea. approx.

Note: If you choose the Mopar seal the oil "slinger" on the back side of the drum might have to be enlarged w/ an air grinder/dremel for the seal pass through. I can explain more if needed.

Also: "Rodney" mentioned to me that often times it's a crack in the drum, behind the lug nuts that creates the leak if the seals don't cure the problem

Not a tough job... just a bit time consuming!

Also watch for grooves where the seal rides. Lots of us have had to install "speedy sleeves" to stop the new seals from leaking in a short time. These are sleeves that you install to creat a new sealing surface. I have the part # and name someplace if you end up needing one. There was lots of discussion about this about 6-8 months ago.

Hi RamBill,

I did this job last year on my 92. The Rawhide part # that Keeno quoted is what I used. Just a couple of points, make sure you clean all the oily crud out behind the oil slingers or you will continue having oil seep out giving the impression that your new seals are leaking. Also when installing the hub try to centre it and lift it on whithout sliding the seal along the axle, which may cause the new seal to be damaged. By the way you will also need quite a big socket to remove the nut on the axle.

Cheers,

Al

when you install the new seals put a bead of silicone gasket maker on the outer edge of the new seal and just inside of the hub that the seal presses into. wipe off excess after install. reocurring leaks usually prove out to be coming from this area as opposed to the seal surface.
