OK, I started to see a leak under the truck. Small wet spot on the garage floor. Hmmmm, trans oil
After some looking, I realized it was from the top of the trans, so I removed my console and boot. The shift tower seemed to be the source. I thought to myself, OK I did a thorough sealing job, but it must be that rubber part on top of the trans that I didn't remove.
Upon removal of the shift tower, I saw my mistake. I had looked at the W-I-D-E pattern of the lower part on the trans (thick rubber gasket that seems to be bonded to the case) and the matching pattern of the spacer plate, and applied the sealant to both sides of the spacer plate. The mating surface of the (plastic
) shift tower is much smaller and stays to the outside of the spacer plate. The sealant I applied to the top of the spacer was mostly un-touched because it was too far inward. Also, the mating surface of the shift tower was very rough and had some realatively large voids. The plastic seems to be cast, but not machined after. I gave it a touch-up with fine sandpaper on the countertop, (don't tell SWMBO
) and applied the sealant the right way, and put it back together.
Just thought it might be helpful for those installing this wonderful kit.
