Has anyone swapped out the incandescent light bulbs in their 3 gauge A-pillar gauge pod for LEDS? My brother just got the Optix installed in his truck & as much as I like the looks of the new gauges, mine work fine! But the LED lighting would be nice. Just not woth the $300 to me to replace my perfectly functioning DiPricols..... Anyone?

Thanks,

Clay

they sell led's to replace dash light bulbs at pep boys in the import/tuner section for a couple bucks in all colors, i couldnt use them in my gauges so i just gutted the bulb holders and soldered the led into it and used a 470 ohm resistor inline with the power wire for each led. leds and resistors available at radio shack, but be sure to wire them right they have a pos and neg wire.

Newbie on leds here... . What is the resister for?

they run on about 3 volts the truck lights are 12 volts it lowers the voltage to around 3 volts so they dont burn out. 470 ohm 1/2 watt

that is only for the leds you get from radio shack or electronics supply co. the ones from auto supply company that are a direct replacement for stock bulbs already have the resistor in them

So if I go to Pep Boys I don't need the resistor? If from Radio Shack, pick up the 470 ohm resistor?

Thanks,

yes, if your gauges use the same bulb as most dash lights or side markers (194 or 94 i think) then you dont need the resistor because the pep boys ones have them already, but if you buy just the led from radio shack then you need a resistor and need to modify your bulb holder to hold the led.

Did all nine of my Autometer guages with the 194 LED bulbs---they are available from www.autolumination.com in Arizona. Ran some small LED's down the side of my running board and canopy too, similar to marker lights but way brighter. They are a lot better then the stocker and no resistor is needed. Hope this helps. ****Caution they are bright and i do have them turned down a bit on the guages. At night when its all lit up there is a blue hue on the inside of my truck---IMHO it looks cool and lots of rubberneckers and compliments from people. :D :D :D

Got any pics of your illuminated gauges? Love to see them...

Here's with blue LED's (had green trying blue for now) Some gauges light up differently, these are the new Stewart Warners. That's why I did one pic in the light. I tried closeups but it's always blurry.

Here are some----#1 is the guages, dark garage,#2 is the LED running board lights reflecting onto my white wall,#3 is the screw type LED along the runningboards

And some more----#1 is just a pic of what they look like not on,#2,another close up,#3 is my 3 oil temp guages mounted in the center of the dash----hope this help and sorry about the quality---my first picture post with the new computer, took me awhile to figure it out.  *****PS if you want to look at a full view of my ride it was featured in last months Diesel Power Mag(FEB ISSUE)page #46. Yes. (sorry the reply took so long)

I haven't received mine yet, it'll probably be later this week though. I however changed my mind on color & just ordered the white led's. I read a statement on their website suggesting order red if you have red lenses & blue for blue lenses, etc, etc... .

I'm just looking for brighter lighting in my gauges so... . We'll see how it works out. All else fails, I'll just install new candescent bulbs & I know it will be a huge improvement!

Damn! I'll have to try again...

Well I received my lights but they won't work how I had hoped. Back to the drawing board. . :( Pics attached. New LEDs & existing bulbs.
