Am currently having a problem with the trans in my 97 3500. Seems it has begun stalling the engine going into reverse or drive from start up. Also have noticed at cold start transmission seems to be starting off in second. did notice on inspection the p/s vac pump leaking a little bit so that is first in line. seal kit from goulds the best way to go with this? any ideas would be appreciated

First welcome. Second, search is your friend. What is your idle set at? Should be 800 or so with the engine at operating temp, AC on and in gear. The seal kit from Cummins is about $12. It has instructions, but no fancy DVD or "tools" made from PVC pipe. A set of common sockets work just fine. If this is a new acquisition, the first priority should be securing the killer dowel pin. The most used tool in the shop will be a factory service manual. I prefer the paper version.

If you are staring off in second, or the gears seem to be hanging up, you need to replace the pressure sensor solenoid and transducer. There are upgraded ones now the use gm solenoids. I got mine from Suncoast.

Thanks for the welcome and for the replies. Obviously new to Dodge and the online thing but am finding lots of good info as well as people. Service Manuals are on their way as well as new power steering lines(Genos) and the seal kit from cummins. Truck idles at 800 rpm as described. Had it over to transmission shop today for service and the once over, found some things from a previous rebuild that, lets just say an opportunity has arrived to do something better!
