I have noticed when I let my EGT cool down with enough time (1:20 to 2:30) that their is less to no chirp from the serpentine belt. Any one else experience this? I do not have gauges yet and I wonder if you folks who do have gauges, noticed the same relationship to shut-down temps and belt chirp. Thanks in advanced to all the congregations devout following, Patrick :D

The chirp is just from being worn and not quite tight so it slips a little on the pulleys.

Heat may have something to do with it but I wouldnt think the belt would get to hot, could be wrong...

I have no chirp. I wouldn't put up with that for more than a few days... that stuff drives me crazy!

I had that once with a Chevy. Put on a new belt and it chirped for a few days... . took it back and got a different brand ( belt, not truck) ... never chirped again.

Mine only chirps when i cut it off. If I put on a new belt, it quits for about a month, but then starts doing it again. Running, mine doesn't chirp at all.

I liked the chirp when the engine is shut off. It just adds to the character of the truck just like the rattle rattle of the CTD. :D Now when the belt starts to squeal that's just not right.

A new belt tensioner will make the chip go away. I just replaced mine and I almost had to stand on the 1/2" breaker bar to get the idler pulley to move far enough to get the belt back on. I could move the old one with my hand. No more chirp :{ :)

Mine chirps sometimes, but only when my fan comes on and thats only about 6 - 8 times a year. I think part of the reason is that I only use and Goodyear Gatorback or a Cummins - Dayco belt. The design of both these belts allows them to flex better in both directions.

On about 75% of all the KDPs I've done the belts have needed to be replaced - with major cracking on the inside. I don't remember any that were not the money saving variety. Just my . 02 worth.

As a matter of fact I had just replaced mine yesterday with a Gator Back. I didn't have any squeal but saw a few cracks (not major) on the belt and thought I would use it as the back up.

When I took it off I was quit surprised. Numerous cuts all the way through the ribs, sections of missing ribs, even one section an inch long had no ribs across the whole width.

Looked OK on there but boy am I glad I decided to change it.

Yea, I replaced my belt the first week I had the truck... but that was 2 1/2 years ago so I need to change I guess.

When I did the KDP last winter it inspected ok... . but I haven't look lately.

eh-hem... . er. . a... . my original belt went 8 years and 140k  before I changed it. Other than being a little dry and some perpendicular cracking it was still sound. Go figure... .

Jay

No chirping here! Replaced the belt @ 84,500km in January 2001. Kept the old belt as a spare.
