I have '95 3500 5 speed with a #10 plate and straight exhaust. I had my timing set last week to 15. 5 and know I have less black smoke. Before I had it timed you can make it bellow out pretty good. Is it normal to have less black smoke with advanced timing? My star wheel is pretty much all the way turned toward the passenger side so the wheel is closer to the front of the truck. What ya'll think?

A lack of advance will give you more white smoke especialy before the motor is fully warm . Lots of advance will make more black . In you'r case the advance you gave it probly helped with the responce and got the turbo moving quicker to burn the fuel better and also a little higher combustion pressure to . mjs

My timing had slipped to about 11° and I had all kinds of black smoke when pulling away from a light. I advanced it to 16. 5° and smoke is definately down. Full throttle smoke really didn't change much.

thanks for the replies. I just wanted to make sure it was suppose to be like that. Less smoke is fine for now but I bet when I throw some bigger injectors it will want to smoke then!

If smoke is what you want, slide the plate and AFC all the way forward. You should be able to make enough smoke to annoy anyone behind you at that point.

Keep an eye on the EGT if you do this though.
