One of my 03's had the fuel pump that was installed on the fuel filter housing replaced, with the in tank pump (under warranty), back in 2005 with only 32000 miles on the engine. The truck now has 135,000 miles on it. How long do these pumps go for??? My other two 03's with the pump installed to filter last anywhere from 50,000 - 75,000 miles. Starting to get worried - snow work hopefully is coming soon and just want to make sure I'am ready. Thanks, Frank

we run a fleet of trucks with in-tank pumps, never had a failure and all of our 03,s had the pumps relocated to the tank under warranty in 03

Thanks guys for your replies. Ckelly, I wish my other two 03's had failed during the warranty period also!!! I'll just continue to carry a spare pump in each of the other two trucks.

you will not need to carry a extra fuel pump if you will add a bypass line around the pump with a check valve in it. the cp3 does not need a lift pump. the cp3 can produce full power and life with MINUS 5 psi input. when the stock pump fails it produces a complete blockage, the cp3 will pull the fuel around the pump and you can replace it at a convenient time and place. some things that might help. brushless pumps last many times longer than a brush type pump. carter division of federal signal now makes one, Germany makes several and I have seen a china made one. your truck needs a 2 micron filter to prevent injector wear and binding problems. consider relocating the pump to the frame near the tank and adding a dual filter after the pump. you can build the filter for $90. I am running a German pump on a Allis Chalmers, cant remember brand but will look. pm me if you want how to on the filter.

Ckelly, I believe I've seen your filter system on the site before, can't remember where? In all of my 03's and the 06' I run the Baldwin PF 7977 fuel filter. I 've considered the Fass Titanium series or the Raptor 100 pump along with the CAT Cummins filter kit ... but never "pulled the trigger" on any of the systems. I run a landscaping business and all of my trucks are used locally, and so far when a pump has failed, I was close enough to the shop that I could tow any of my trucks back and replace the pump. Each fall/ winter, I start to get nervous about any of these pumps failing during a winter snow storm while plowing!!! In the past ten years no winter failures (knock on wood!!!). Maybe this winter I should really consider in up grading the two trucks with the engine mounted pumps. Thanks again for your advice and I'll look on the site again for your write up on your filter system.

The fuel DOES cool the in-tank pump. SO..... Don't run the tank low on fuel. By running the tank low, the pump does not stay fully submerged.

My intank unit was weak with arround 140000M, could not hold the pressure under load. So I replaced it with a Fass95.

Intank Pump stays always completely submerged in diesel until the last quarter gallon diesel left the tank, pump sump.
