All, Went out the other night and noticed fuel pressure of about

three pounds--so mad I didn't even work on it the next day.

History: truck has 50K, replaced first pump at about 35K, found it again at about zero at 49k--talked Cummins dealer out of new pump (was about 13 months since new one)---replaced FP guage with new electronic gauge at same time..... now at 50k the %^&* thing is gone again----checked the voltage at the pump and only reads about 8. 5 volts, both my almost new pump and old standby click on for about 1-2 seconds then nothing... ... . any ideas out there!?! Sure could use some--love the cummins, but hate the feeling of waiting for this to happen again!!!! R, J. B.

I would strongly suggest moving the lift pump or installing a pusher. There is a kit for moving the lift pump currently for sale on ebay for $65. I have 90,000 miles on my first lift pump. I installed a pusher at 75,000 because I noticed my numbers were getting weak. Still running it throught the weak factory lift pump though.

BTW- the pump running for 1-2 seconds is normal when you first turn the key over. To get it to run for longer periods you either have to have the motor running or you can bump the starter without starting the motor to get it to run for 30 seconds. Most of the time you bump the starter and let the lift pump run when you have to bleed air out of the system or are refilling the filter bowl.

The Cummins Solution?

When I filled out the Cummins survey last night [to get a free cab badge] I looked through the Cummins site-- Maintenance Tips section. Cummins recommends a pre filter for the fuel BEFORE the lift pump. Anybody doing this with stock pump in original location?

Also when I filled out the survey, they had a question.

How long do you intend to keep your truck? From---- until ----

I put [Now] until [He!! freezes over] :D :D

Daveshoe,

Make sure you have the latest part # for the lift pump. It is an exceptional lift pump with no problems to note; you can tell if you have the latest if you get a new 'pigtail' connector with the pump!

The one I bought was the latest version. I've put over 20,000 miles on it and it still holds 11 psi going down the highway and 8 to 9 at wide open throttle. Is there a relay on the wiring going to the pump to ensure that it is getting full voltage at all times? We have to (hotwire) the pumps on the GN and Turbo Buicks in order to obtain full voltage and we also install a volt booster to give extra voltage at wide open throttle.

A pusher is the way to go, Also a regulator.

This is my set-up

The 18 aux tank I installed and made a supply to a capped fitting on the top of the main tank. Got this from www.westmarine.com

The Aux tank is supplied by an old lift pump to the main tank.

The set-up above keeps the PSI's much more manageable. I Idle at 13 PSI (my setting it) driving down the road is 12 or so, amd wide open throttle is no less than 10 or 11. With this set-up, even the pusher pump has a small head pressure so it don't have to work hard
