I have a buddy that has an 04. 5 with a P0628 and it dies while driving?? the in tank lift pump was just replaced and the truck still dies while driving. Where is the fuel pump relay on an 04. 5?? Or can it be something else

Obviously the first thing to check is the filter. I assume you've done that.

When you say it "dies while driving", do you mean you actually have to be moving for it to die? In other words, it'll idle just fine, but under load it dies?

Are there any fueling boxes on the truck? The LP doesn't have a relay (as far as I know) - it's run directly from the ECM. It's unlikely the ECM is bad.

If the filter is good, you really need to check the LP fuel pressure before moving on. That'll tell you whether you're looking at an HP fuel problem.

check fuse 17, check the fuel pump relay. Both are in the same location.

Oops! Sorry about that, I guess there is a relay. Maybe I should've taken the time to actually check the manual before opening my mouth.

On edit: wow, they really changed things from 2003-2004. 5! They've gone to this "Totally Integrated Power Module". For 2003, I was correct - the LP is run directly from pin 45 of ECM connector C1. But for 2004. 5-up it's run through pin 18 of the TIPM.

I've got the exact problem, and truck. Towing to dealer today. Also threw a P0652, P2121, P2269. Cant seem to find what these mean.

My truck just threw the 0628 code recently and it also did the start and die thing. I've been letting it sit while I ordered a new pump. But, now I'll have to check the #17 fuse and fuel pump relay.

It turned out to be my lift pump, dealer will have the revised in tank one in today, also they said theyre going to do some sort of tank, vent, hose update that will also be covered under the cummins warranty.

well. . today i popped a P0628. . driving home just fine then the engine just died at a traffic light. . won't run. . it will crank and every so often catch then die again. . i don't have a fuel pressure gauge [kicking myself] so i cracked open the filter drain and turned the key on and no forced flow through the filter drain.

i haven't checked the filter yet as i just finally got it dragged home [armstrong steering is hard to do. .]

my money is on the lift pump.

i have a walbro pump at home along with a bunch of fittings and hose and 2µ filters/heads that i had planned to install this past summer but never got around to getting the final pieces to make it all work [still missing a few fittings]. . i am really kicking myself now over this one

i won't have the time to change the pump out until sunday and i have 4 days of work ahead of me. . i am really tempted to pull the pump and install the adapter fittings and just hose it from the pickup to the filter housing [no pump]

murphy struck again. it always fails at the worst time eh... ?

Ouch. Another one bites the dust. At least you have most of what you need.

Ryan

almost all i need [still need some tee fittings, barbs and other misc stuff to plumb back the bypass from the pump]. . biggest thing i don't have is time. .

i hadn't finished making my new fuel pickup tube so i think it is going to be a hack & splice on the stock fuel pickup tube. . i really didn't want to do that

stock fuel tank vent line is 3/4" isn't it? [gonna tee my return into that i think]

borrow my mom's loser cruiser. . :(

that's about as bad as being towed home behind my pop's silverado [funny though, my truck weighs more than his work trailer does when loaded :-laf]

I would not let the dealer install the new lift pump revision which moves the lift pump into the tank. When that pump fails (which they are know to do so) you are now commited to the "in tank" pump. I would install an aftermarket pump that will last and be done with it. Just my 2 cents...

i've got a walbro pump and a lift pump relocation kit from vulcan performance. . i have a modified hydraulic relief valve that i had planned on using as a regulator but i haven't had time to tune it [i redrilled some ports on it and changed the spring to allow me to adjust low enough for fuel use] so i will use a simple check valve with a stiffer spring. . it pops at 14psi. i still need a few fittings that i can buy on friday and i need a cheap inline filter to use a strainer before the walbro [my original plan was to have some spin on prefilters but i don't have the time to plumb this properly and make the brackets to hang the filter heads off of]
