Just wanted to reaffirm what others have said - that a fuel gauge is a very good item to install. In my opinion, even forego the boost gauge (EGT gauge definately 1rst) if necessary. I just got 1rst hand experience in how quickly a lift pump can go with no power loss symptoms at all. I installed my gauge a little over a month ago and had pressures of 15 idle, 12 cruise, 7-8 WOT. No difference after a bombing trip to Vegas about 2 weeks ago. I thought I had a work horse for my lift pump! Sunday took a trip and parked the truck with 15 psi. Monday started it up and it struggled to get to 9, headed for the interstate to see what was up and it dropped to 3 just easing up to 60 mph. Turned around and parked it. I had already discussed the new mods with the service manager at Bob Ruwart Motors in Wheatland beforehand and he had told me to just come talk to him if anything came up. Well I didn't think it would be this soon but time to find out. They replaced it without any questions, had one in stock even :D . When he delivered it (they do deliver out here) he made the comment that the mechanic figured the gauge probably saved an injection pump! Long post but seems like all we hear about is lousy dealers so wanted to tell about a good one (BOB RUWART MOTORS) and how important the fuel gauge is!

P. S. Better add that I am in no way connected with Bob Ruwart Motors or Diesel Dynamics!

You expect me to believe that one, X-10? I took mine in for the same thing and two hours later, the Master Tech still didn't know it was a diesel! I ended up ordering a lift pump from Cummins.

P. S. Better add that I am in no way connected with Regal Dodge of Sunnyvale, California!

Mr. Dressler , my, how you talk about my home town dweebs----oh oh, I ment dealer.

After your experiance, I certainly have no connection with them, but I did purchase a filter once.

great to hear

X-10 its good to hear that there are some dealers out there that want and respect our business!!! I think they are few and far between but Bob Rewart Motors and Wheatland Wyoming are not far from me at all and OH X-10 not to far either, I may have to make a road trip:cool: :D  ... ... ... . Just out of curiosity... since you all are on the topics of fuel pumps. For the guys that have replaced your pumps, how many miles did you have on your trucks? I don't have gauges installed yet and with all these post of pumps going bad, I am getting kind of nervous.

I just replaced my lift pump right at 47K. The idle pressures were around 9 psi, but as soon as I'd put my foot into it they dropped down to 0.

Easy enough job to replace, just a little extra trouble since it had the factory loc-tite on the mounting nuts.

32,000-miles and I started getting concerned. I had been watching it get worse and worse over the last 10k miles. This is with a totally stock engine.

Kevin, feel free to stop by anytime - just leave that "clutch eating dog" at home :D .

Calfroper, mine has just under 17,000 miles.

David, liked your P. S. on the first post.

I feel for you guys with lousy dealers. I've had nothing but great service from these guys on the pickup and car. I didn't know how things would go for sure so I ordered a new pump from Cummins Rocky mountain right after I parked the truck. It now resides under the back seat as a spare just in case!

I've heard others say there's just gradually went. The way mine went out just overnight makes me think it would have done it with or without the new bombs. Don't know  .

Around 16K for me, fuel pressure started heading south to the tune of a pound or two a week. Added a pusher when it was cruising at 10 and heading for 0 under hard acceleration.

Cruises around 15 now and close to 10 when it is time to go.

Man... I better hurry and get some gauges... . I have 12000 currently, with a huge road trip comming up. Thanks for the info guys.

Lift pump

I had about 9,000 on my 01. 5 when my lift pump went out. Mine acted exactly the way X-10 told his story.

Steve, I thought for sure your pump would be the first to go out, pulling that slow heavy CAT around :D . Pretty wierd just talking to you about them Saturday, then mine dieing on Monday. Guess I better find some wood to knock on next time I'm talking about good lift pumps!

calfroper, I sure don't see what it would hurt by at least getting the fuel gauge on before your trip. Might just save you some down time.

lift pump

Mine fizzled at 21k, was very erratic for 2 weeks and steadily delivered less psi and got to the point that any throttle at all would take it to 0, called my 5 screw stealer:-{} get this he said drive it down here and we will test it:confused: :-laf

I said WHAT??? I will not jeprodise my VP-44 either you can supply me with a new fuel pump and I will give you an old one or I will get on from cummins but I aint driving the truck. He said he would get back to me ,and he did that afternoon just as I finished up with the Cummins lift pump instal. He said he couldnt get me a replacment pump till he tested mine and then he would have to order it  I just said dont worry about it I will handle it.

Wouldnt you think the dealer may want your return business???

Dealer is in Lander

and the one in Riverton I had problems before My truck even showed up, I had ordered it from them and 3 times he called me and said the price had to go up  from what he quoted me, then the truck finally shows up and it has a horrible paint job,it looked like a layer of wax was between the paint and clear coat, Dealer wanted to re-paint it,I said where is my money see ya later:-{} , he said they could order another one but I couldnt wait.

Looks like I found 2-- 5 screw stealers so far. guess I will have to be my own warrentee station:D  :D

Lift pump

Whitmore,

I went through the same thing, only I complied. Got all my work done under warranty. Did you have to pay for the pump?

My scenario: Had gauges installed and saw 14 psi on fp at idle and 8 at wot. One week later I had 3 psi at idle and 0 at wot. Soooo I thought it was a defective gauge and returned to the guy who installed it. He used a mechanical gauge and verified 3 psi at idle.

When I took it to the dealer the mechanic said " your gauge is wrong, if the fp was that low your truck would be on the hook. I said, I think as long as there is some fp the truck will run, but if you don't want to do anything let it go until the vp44 goes then you can replace it all at once.

He took the truck in the garage and put his gauge on it. I said was did you find? Ahhh, ahhh, 3 psi, I'll have to order a new lift pump for you.

Life is good, live on the edge and enjoy it. Happy trails to ya

WY Dealers.

Hey guys,

I sure have been happy with the Dealer in Laramie. Bought my truck from them. . beat all the ,Idaho,NM,OK, dealers by about $2000.

They have never quibbled on any warranty work. (New transmission was a biggie. )

If you need a little smoke blown to make you feel good,it is the wrong place. They are pretty laid back,no razzle, dazzle.

I wish I knew more about the lift pump scenario before. I believe mine had been bad for a yr before I had to replace it. (and that was due to pumping full of water). It may be possible that a bad lift may have saved the inj pump. For some reason (thick milky water/fuel mixture in tank?) the lift and inj pumps couldn't suck enough fuel to keep running. There was water in the filter, but it didn't keep it full. Probably a good thing.

The fuel presure guages is intersting. Is this a kit, or do it yourself? I would probably be intersted in a before/after setup. Does a guy have to put gaudy gauges up on the dash or hose clamped to the steering wheel? Or is there a resonably nice settup?

This is probably in my mag that I haven't read yet. I'm sure this has been covered MANY times here. I know how some of these subjects come up everytime a greenhand logs - in. Can someone link me to an old thread covering this?

BTW, I replaced mine from Cummins. 1/2 the $ of Chrashler! I still thought it to be enough for a bloody pump tho!
