I was writing in an earlier thread that my truck left me stranded. It turns out that it was my lift pump that crapped with only 12000 miles on it it kinda makes me wonder. Anyways is this a problem with the third gens and has there been anyone else with this problem. DAVE...

I herd that the problem is the fuel more so in alberta something to do with conuctivity, running that #1 grade winter fuel. But D. C tells me they modified their lift pumps to fix that problem. I hope so i don't want to be stranded again. DAVE...

Mine left me stranded at around 50,000kms. I was told that the replacement pump is an upgrade. I guess time will tell. DC sure puts the dealer and customer through a lot of hoops and hurdles. I had to prove that I had purchased filters and show them my service records. It seems that filters need changing a lot more often then in the past. I have a Kubota diesel in my commercial mower and I have had the same experience with fuel filters on it.

So is DC recommending fuel filter changes more often than specified in the service book? Our 03 Dodge EMS truck has had two pump failures. Dealer blames it on Shell diesel fuel (huh?) and high idle times. They just changed out the last pump a month ago. I hope it is the upgraded unit. No problems with my own truck at all.

I'm surprised to hear a bad lift pump caused your truck to not run. I thought these trucks didn't really need the lift pump to run. Did yours die after you did a fuel filter change or just driving. I may have to get a gauge to monitor this thing just like my 2nd Gen...

Thats just great! I was stupidly thinking that I got out from under the lift pump curse by selling the 01 and buying a 3rd generation truck. If Toyota ever maks a heavy duty diesel truck I am going for it the minute they come out! There is just something missing from the American theology of building something right the first time. Damn, after all of these years of lift pump problems you would think that for an extra $100. they would just do it right. I am glad I don't have to ride on the space shuttle for the same reason. Lift pump failures, that just really burns my ss!

Mine died going down the highway. I was told that a lift pump failure can cause a stall as the injection pump won't feed itself under all circumstances. I am still under warranty so I am not looking to something else unless it becomes a problem. I got a feeling that DC is trying to blame the fuel we are buying for the failures as they wanted to know where I got my fuel.

I sympathize with all of you that have had failures and yes, after the 2nd gen lift pump problems, engineers should have ensured that the 3rd gen lift pumps were way overbuilt. I would, however ask you to keep one thing in mind:... ... ... ... None of you have had a CP-3 failure. If these were 2nd gen failures, a good many VP-44's would have bit the green weiner along with the lift pumps. So as much as it is an annoyance, its not a problem of the same gravity as the 2nd gen fuel issues. Replacing a VP-44 off warranty would make me very angry.

My 2 cents.

Dave

ps. Oh yeah, Toyota will never make a heavy duty diesel truck. ;)

So this is the deal the dealership calls me today my lift pump was supossed to be in. But guess what they are waiting for approval from D. C. I guess anything to do with the fuel system is on a tight rein. As a good dealer they are they are ordering one from cummins installing it until this is straightened out they took a fuel sample and sent it off. So obviously there is a problem they are trying to figure out. Taking a fuel sample what the @!#@$@... 12000miles? I hope at least they install the so called modified one.

My 03 had it replaced, never left me stranded but it was out 8 days getting fixed. When it started happening again I got rid of it and bought the 04. 5 600 with my fingers crossed that it would not have the problems that everyone talks about and at 4k miles all is good. :)

One of the guys at workk had his lift pump go out today. He has about 35000 miles on it. I hope mine holds up. Anyone know if they start getting weak and PSI drops or do they just up and quit? A gauge might be a good idea.

Nice. Taking chevys approach to faulty parts. We cant warranty that because you bought cruddy fuel. Wonder why they havent taken that approach on the second gens? Shouldnt the lift pumps be designed with bad fuel in mind. To compensate for what we are going to see in the real world.

After thinking about it before dragging out my 03 DC and 5th wheel and going on vacation in fear of being a victum of American theology of design. I am thinking about selling the whole damn rig and buying a Jap sports car for vacations and staying in motels. No more crap like with the Harley Davidson that lead to a broken dream after 3 engines in 4 years, because we are foolish enough to dream of being able to get something worth our money made in the U. S. A. Oh yea I forgot about the Mexican truck. The made in Japan, G 35 Infinity coupe is starting to look real good to me. Who needs more grief with everything else that is going on. I am not going to end uo p****d off for a week after being stranded in the New Mexico desert from our non competing quality of products. I have got $80,000 tied up in another dream that is just stupidity again! Come on! Thats it I have had it, and if Kerry gets elected I will be leaving this failed system for good!

I talked to a guy at work that has the same truck as me same year but less milelage. He said 8500 miles anyways he was driving home from work out in the bush middle of nowhere and it just died called a tow truck and had to wait a day and a half for a fix. Same thing lift pump crapped out 8500 miles?

MADE WITH PRIDE IN GOOD OL' MEXICO... how about we have the iraqi's build ours... . 2. 00/gal of gas... 3. 00/gl for milk... yeah i know diesel isn't there yet but i also have a gasser car.

lift pump

now that we are seeing lp failures on the 3g's as well. what can we do ourselves to help from being stranded. a fuel pressure guage is nice, but if it goes from good to bad in 50 miles then your still stuck on the side of the road with a guage that says "0". i would rather put my money into another pump of some sort. would the FASS system solve the problelms? what else is out there

Creepy thing I noticed reading the posts here is that the majority of lift pump failures were Canadian. Coincidence??. Talking to a Guy at the fuel pump (63. 9 c\litre. . take that hemi's) he was saying a cummins guy told him 50,000 km was the average failure on lift pumps for the 3g. Just a bad rumour ... I hope

Hope that is just a rumor, I have 75,000 km on mine & have changed the filter every 20 k or less. Used Polar Power additive all winter & switched to Howes for the summer. I always fuel up at Hughes on 112 ave. as that is the largest volume diesel station they have & out of town always use truck stops so never get old or dirty fuel. Have had 0 problems with the truck so far & quite often gross out at 24 to 25,000 lbs.
