lift pump dead?

yesterday I took the fuel filter off to inspect it and I pumped the lift pump lever just to see and no fuel came out at all..... So my question is would a weak lift pump cause the engine to run rough and to smoke? and now it does not want to start... . ( weak/dead lift pump) and were would be a good place to get one (phone or internet order)?? Jim

I have never been able to get my lift pump lever to work. Something about it needing to be on the right spot on the cam I've heard. Hard starting could be due to an air leak and not a bad lift pump. If you crack the lines, do you see air?
