If you can't get it out with one of those extension magnets (magnet has saved my butt on several occasions but not with lift pump pushrod) my guess would be you have to drop the pan. Not an easy job since on many installations the engine must be lifted so the pan can clear the crossmember. I would try my best with a magnet before tearing down the engine. Maybe some of the engine Guru's know better where it would be likely to fall.
